Many students and parents were confused about the ratings. No surprise, since it is confusing! The color guard rating comes from one judge; the percussion rating comes from one judge; the drum major rating comes from one judge. None of those judges' scores count towards the overall band rating. There is a separate panel of 5 judges whose scores are averaged together to determine the overall band rating. A score above 85.0 is considered Superior (I). 70.0-84.9 = Excellent (II). 55.0 - 69.9 = Good (III). 0 - 54.9 = Fair (IV).
Our results:
Band Judge 1: Excellent (83.2)
Band Judge 2: Superior (85.5)
Band Judge 3: Excellent (84.0)
Band Judge 4: Superior (85.0)
Band Judge 5: Excellent (78.0)
TOTAL SCORE: 83.73 - 4th place in Class A (1st place: New Hampstead; 2nd place: Thomson; 3rd place: Jenkins Co.)
SHOUT-OUTS:
Color Guard! Superior rating (the only group in Class A to receive a superior) AND Best in Class! Our color guard was SIXTH PLACE OVERALL (out of all 16 bands). Absolutely amazing. Huge shout-out to Coach Flowers and Coach Dee for their leadership.
Percussion! Superior rating, 4th place in Class A - You love to see it!
GENIA!!! Superior rating, BEST IN CLASS(!), and 5th PLACE OVERALL (of out all 15 bands with Drum Majors). Super proud of you; you deserve it!
PARENTS: If you have video from Saturday's performance, could you please share it - hank.carter@screven.k12.ga.us. THANK YOU!
After Friday's results, we are offically IN the playoffs. This week's game is huge: whoever wins hosts a first round playoff game as the #2 seed in the region, and whoever loses will travel as the #3 seed.
If we lose, we will travel to the winner of Friday's Swainsboro vs. Dublin game in Region 2.
The first round of the playoffs is Friday, November 10 (unless GHSA moves the game to Saturday, Nov. 11, which they might do). The band will most likely participate whether it is home or away. Please plan accordingly.
(We are in Class A - Division 1, Region 3.)
This week is our last Monday after-school rehearsal for Color Guard and Percussion.
We do not have any more Tuesday rehearsals for marching band.
We will have Thursday rehearsals as long as we have football (see above).
IMPORTANT: Thursday's rehearsal ends at 5:00 p.m., NOT 5:45.
The Dot Sheet Bonfire is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, November 11th from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Bring your dot sheets and drill charts! We will throw it all in the fire, plus we'll enjoy something from the grill, and be ready for the traditional HIDE AND SEEK game! Watch this space for details. Directions to the event will be given at rehearsal.
We will be in full uniform for the rest of the season.
Everyone should wear a t-shirt (usually their UA member shirt) and shorts under the uniform. Sleeveless shirts are not permitted.
HAIR: Your hair must either be worn up in the shako (hat), OR you may tuck your hair into the back of your jacket, as long as it does not stick out the bottom of your jacket.
GLOVES: Please take care of your gloves. Please do NOT keep your gloves sealed up in your hat box. Replacement gloves are $5 per pair.
GAUNTLETS: You now have a pair of gauntlets. Do not lose them. There is a fee this year to replace your gauntlets. I do not know what that fee is yet. Probably about $50.00.
UNIFORMS are either all the way on or all the way off. If we take jackets off, your bibbers should be all the way on, fully zipped up, etc.
DO NOT RUN IN UNIFORM.
TAKE CARE OF YOUR UNIFORM JACKET. It can be on your body, on a hanger, or folded neatly. Those are the only options.
Your shako should ALWAYS be right-side up, especially when the plume is attached. You should always carry your shako right-side up. Never carry it by the neck strap (with the plume dangling towards the ground).
We need to show that we can take care of our uniforms so that the school system will help us purchase new ones!
Our first after-school Symphonic Band rehearsal is TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 14th. Everyone who is in a band class at SCHS (Per. 2, 6, or 7) is in Symphonic Band and is requried to be at this rehearsal (3:30-5:00 p.m.). Please start figuring out your rides, etc. The Christmas Concert is on Tuesday, Dec. 5th at 7 p.m. in the SCHS Auditorium.
As usual, the band will perform in the Screven County Christmas parade on Saturday, December 9th. More details will come later, but for now, start thinking about how you can LIGHT UP your instrument/equipment for this night parade through downtown Sylvania.
First of all, contact Mr. Carter on the BAND HOTLINE (912) 549-0262. Call or text. Not communicating about an absence means it is automatically unexcused.
Secondly, be aware that you must participate in the final run-through or you cannot perform on the field. Usually the final run is at Thursday rehearsal. Even if your absence is excused, you cannot perform on the field if you miss the final run. (You can still perform in the stands, etc.)
Thirdly, be aware that you may not be allowed to perform if the staff determines that you do not know your part well enough, usually due to absence (but not always). This is for the safety of everyone; students who do not know their part tend to trip up other students, causing falls, broken instruments, and injuries. So if you miss Tuesday, you may be asked to not perform that week.
Malaiyah M. (percussion) - Nov. 17
