Devin G. - March 2
Step 1 - Join the Jazz Band Google Classroom. Join code: 2latggl
Step 2 - Listen to the six jazz tunes in the "Jazz Listening" playlist, posted on Classroom. Or, just click here:
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGU3joDJCCUFRdn6OvEN_520A45ZwUdon
You need to be very familiar with those 6 tunes by Monday afternoon.
HINTS:
The first two tunes on the list, Take Five and So What, are performed by small jazz ensembles, called a jazz combo. The combo for Take Five is led by an alto sax. The combo for So What is led by a trumpet. Also, the time signature for Take Five is 5/4, which you should be able to count/feel.
The other four tunes are for full jazz ensemble (5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, piano, guitar, bass, drums). On Green Dolphin Street switches between a straight-8th and a swing-8th feel; the rest are all swing.
All of Me, Pennies From Heaven, and Take the 'A' Train all have lyrics. If you learn where the title is in the lyrics, then you'll have it. These videos should help:

Step 3 - Attend Monday afternoon's Jazz Band rehearsal. It's from 3:30 until 5 p.m. in the Band Room.
Thank you for an outstanding job at our pre-LGPE performance! Students, your band directors are very proud of you. Now, let's keep working hard towards that Superior rating next week!
After-school rehearsals are a grade. You must participate fully, have your pencil, your instrument, and your music in order to receive full credit. Unexcused absences count as a zero in the grade book.
You may miss up to half of the rehearsal time with an excused absence (such as sports, doctor appointments, illness, etc.). Once you miss more than half of the after-school rehearsal time, you will not be allowed to perform on the concert, which will have a negative impact on your grade. NOTE: Quarantines due to COVID-19 do not count, but you still need to notify Mr. Carter using the form below.
Need to miss a rehearsal? Use the form to request an excused absence:

TraiLS is our leadership training program. Any student interested in serving in a leadership position for next year's band season should attend our TraiLS sessions. We have a session this week on Friday, and another on Monday. TraiLS sessions are from 3:30 - 4:30 unless otherwise noted on the band calendar.
Be sure to check the band calendar for future meetings.
Our annual Large Group Performance Evaluation (aka Concert Festival) will be on Wednesday, March 9, at 2:00 p.m. in Savannah. This will take you out of class all day. The event is held at the Fine Arts Auditorium at the GSU-Armstrong Campus on Abercorn St. in Savannah. Our detailed itinerary is below:
If you have already earned a varsity letter and have not yet purchased a letter jacket, you have a second chance! Our Neff Company sales rep will be here before school in the SCHS lunchroom on Wednesday, March 2. I want to encourage you to consider spending a week with other student musicians at a summer band camp. You'll spend a week playing great music, making new friends, and plenty of other fun activities, too! Two great camps happen right here in Georgia:
Encore! Summer Band Camp is June 19-23 at Georgia State College and University in Milledgeville, GA. For more info: https://encorebandcamp.com/
The University of Georgia School of Music hosts a music camp AND a marching band leadership camp. Both are in June and take place on their campus in Athens. For more info: https://music.uga.edu/summer-music-camps
