Q: Can I wear blue jeans for marching band?
A: NO. Marching Band is an athletic activity, and blue jeans are not appropriate wear.
Q: What SHOULD I wear for marching band?
A: A comfortable t-shirt/top, shorts, and athletic shoes with socks. Shoulders and belly buttons must be covered. You’ll be most comfortable with a hat and sunglasses. This applies during band camp and for outdoor rehearsals after school.
Q: I need to miss a few days of band camp. Is that OK?
A: Not really, but it depends. A parent or guardian needs to contact Mr. Carter. Band Camp dates were a part of the contract you signed in May; we gave you those dates so you could plan around it. Absences are excused on a case-by-case basis.
Q: What do I do if I need to miss a rehearsal?
A: Contact Mr. Carter. The best way to do that is by email at hank.carter@screven.k12.ga.us. (Guard members may contact Mr. von Waldner instead.) Do NOT ask another student to tell us.
Q: I need to use a school-owned instrument. Is that possible?
A: Probably yes, depending on what you play. If you need a school-owned instrument but don’t have one checked out now, you need to contact Mr. Carter.
Q: Do you have an extra copy of the Performer Contract?
A: Of course! Click here: 2019 SCHS Band Performer Contract
Q: How can I be as ready as possible for Band Camp?
A: GREAT QUESTION!
Practice! Even if all you do is play some long tones, do SOMETHING to get your playing muscles in shape.
Learn/review the fight song, national anthem, alma mater, and offense/defense cheers. Music is available online through the marching band page on Google Classroom.
Get outside, especially in the morning. It’s helpful if you are acclimated (ready for and used to) the heat.
Eat a good breakfast, even if you’re not used to it. You need the energy. But if you usually eat cereal with milk, you might want to skip the milk during band camp.
