Social/Political Gelatin & Linoleum Prints

For this art project we first had to use gelatin and make super cool prints that have a lot of texture. I made about seventeen gelatin prints. To do this we added texture to the gelatin, like feathers, string, rubber bands etc, and add ink to make cool designs. My favorite part about this was the gelatin printing part because the designs came out amazing. The second thing we had to do was plan an image we wanted to carve and create using linoleum prints. To make a linoleum print we need to get carving tools, a board, and an idea of what you want to carve. I'm doing my social issue on suicide so I carved a hanging rope. Later on after carving we have to lay ink down onto the print and place it onto our gelatin prints to make a poster like design. So then you will now have a background with texture and a design in the front. Later we went through and extended our drawings. To do this I went through adding materials like markers and colored pencils. I extended my drawings by adding words saying "prevent don't cause" meaning prevent suicide don't be the one to cause someone to commit suicide. My favorite part of my art is the vines. My favorite part is the vines because they are crazy and all over the place and can be dangerous just like some peoples lives which, if you have so much going on in your life, can cause suicide. :( But I also just like the vines because the way the red coloring blends from the image to the vines into a green color. One thing I could improve on is sketching my extended design first next time and then going over in marker so that way I don't mess it up. When I was adding vines I made sure they touched all four corners of the paper. When adding the vines I also made sure that there was a balanced amount so there wasn't too much white space and it looked like it had an even amount. Overall, this was a very fun project and really helped me think about texture, design, to be careful when carving, and what issues are going on around the world.
