Color Design

I chose to paint an elephant because elephants are my favorite animals. I painted the primary colors, the secondary colors, and the tertiary colors (84 different colors). My favorite part about this project is how you can sort of tell it's a colorful elephant but when you can't it's a beautiful, colorful, and bright painting. One thing I could improve on is making just a few more of the colors more bold. Another thing I could improve on is bringing home more paint to work on my project because I realized I kept running out of paint at home. From the peer critiques some people said it would be interesting if I outlined my elephant. If I did this I was thinking of using gold or silver marker. When I was mixing the paint for each section I realized that it was harder to mix the tertiary colors than it was to mix primary colors. I believe this was because with tertiary colors you need to mix two primary colors and then add more of one of those primary colors and then separately add in the white and blacks. It was easier to mix the primary colors with a white or black because then there is less color mixing going on. From this project I learned that when it comes to painting you fist need to mix your colors on a palette using a knife to mix. Then you use your paint brush on the canvas making sure that each color has enough coats to be solid and bold. But overall I really loved this project and I learned a lot about colors and a lot of new techniques when it comes to painting.

For this project I decided to mix and paint the colors red (primary color) and violet (secondary color). In this project we had to add white to make the lighter shades and add black to make the darker shades. My favorite part about this project is how bold some of my colors were. Another thing I like about this project is how it shows the different colors you can make by just adding different amounts of white or black. One thing I could improve on in this project is using tape. I didn't use tape to line the border so the paint came out messier than it should've so tape would've helped with that. In order to fix up the messy paint I went over it with many layers of white. This helped make my borders look a lot cleaner. Another thing I could improve on in this project is trying to make my darker colors so they look just a little bit more different from one another. I've realized it's hard to mix the darker colors because if you add too much black then it'll look too dark or it'll look like the last color. And if you don't add enough blacks then it'll look too light of a color. So next time i'm going to take more time when it comes to making the darker colors perfect. One thing i've realized from both of these projects is that the color that you add the most white to is the most pigmented and bold color of all the colors. I also realized that you have to do the most layers with the darker colors in order to make them bold enough. But overall I really enjoyed this project and it really helped me understand colors when it comes to mixing and painting.
