Sculpture #2

This assignment was to create something either a person, place, or object and use a material that relate to the sculpture. The subject of my creation is my cat Opie. My work was made by first creating the body out of newspaper and tape to create a strong base/ bones for the body. I didn't like the position of his body so I re-built his "bones" into a laying down position instead of a sitting up position. I then went in and added yarn to give the cat fur and fluffed it up with a brush to make it have more texture. Even though it was difficult to fluff it up, it's good that I tried and I know now how that material actually works which will help me with future projects when deciding a material.

I chose to create this specific artwork because I love animals, especially my cat. It’s arranged by having his long fluffy tail wrap around is back side as he is laying down. How my project evolved was I changed the bones structure so he was in a better position. I revised my artwork by going in and adding more yarn over time in order to make him fluffier. I kept building up the fur on his tale, torso, head, and the rest of the body. I probably could've added more fluff to the body but it was very hard to brush out the thick yarn in some parts. I spent hours just trying to fluff up the yarn to what I partially liked.

The meaning behind my artwork is my cat Opie simply sitting peacefully. How my artwork relates to my life is because I love my cat so much he is always there purring and being adorable. What I'm most proud of in my artwork is the tail, it took hours to brush out the yarn alone so I worked very hard to do my best. I struggled with untangling the yarn because it was all wrapped and in order to fluff it up like hair it needs to be untangled. It was a very tedious task. But I overcome these struggles by taking breaks every now and then. My artwork could be stronger if I spent more time untangling more yarn and make his fur look more even. But overall I tried my best and worked very hard (6+ hours) on this piece.
