Sketch Ideas For The Girl:
For this project we were assigned a project was to address an issue by having our project as a response/showing the issue. My creation is addressing the issue of the standards of beauty. My project is of a girl sitting on the ground in puddles with an umbrella and a light post. My work was made by me first by making a slab. Then I started to make the base of the girl all made out of clay. Then I tried to figure out how I was going to make the girl stand but it wouldn't work so eventually I had her sit on the ground/platform. She is holding an umbrella with percentages on it that are facts that represent the standards of beauty.
In my artwork I made the girl sitting in the center of the slab with an umbrella, that covers her non-existing face, and a light post. The light post was added to give the artwork more of a life related and involved feeling. Rather than it just being a girl it makes it so people can use their imagination to make it some type of setting but of their choice. At first my project was going to be a girl walking and stepping in the "puddles" (which represent certain words). But then she wouldn't stand properly because of the top heavy umbrella. So I made a light post to try and balance on the weight and have her leaning on it but she wouldn't stand up. So eventually I tried making a bench that she could sit on but it kept falling apart, even after I tried to let is harden more. The finally I made her new legs and rain boots were added and she is sitting on the puddles.
The story behind my artwork is a girl who has been taken ahold of by the standards of beauty. She is sitting on the ground in the rain with an umbrella. The percentages on top of the umbrella represent eating disorders and other facts, like depression, that has to do with the standards of beauty that affect women. The words she is sitting on are depression, anxiety, and makeup. These are all things that affect her now that didn't before. The words are in the puddles she's sitting in because the rain represents all that is burdened on a women due to the beauty standards nowadays. This relates to my life because what the girl is sitting on relates to me. I'm proudest of how I portrayed my message in my artwork. The story also includes how the girl is using an umbrella to try to hold back the "rain" but the puddles still get to her.
