This assignment was to stick to your concentration, mine is plants, and create an art piece with a material of your choice. The subject of my creation is just a single flower sitting peacefully. My work was made by first getting a sheet of glass that would be the base for all of the smaller pieces of glass that I glued on. I dug through different bags and containers of glass to get the colors that I desired. I used rods of glass in the background to add more pattern and colors. I used smaller pieces of class in the center to create the single flower. Towards the end I went in and added a border using small class pieces, matching the colors of the rest of the piece. I decided to add a border because not only didn't it feel too plain but also I feel like it draws more attention towards the flower since it's in the center of that. Once my piece was completed it was placed in a glass kiln and the glass melted together, revealing my final product.
I chose to create this specific artwork because I wanted to try a new material and I thought this would be a great opportunity to do that. I also really like flowers because their easy to be creative with when changing the shape, size, and color. It’s arranged by having the flower in the center (touching the bottom of the piece), there are glass rods going across the back around the flower in opposite directions and there is a border. The glass rods and border helped me fill in some empty space. But I wanted the flower to not be fully covered up so I left some empty spots around it. How my project evolved was that I kept changing my idea of what type of flower I'd make and what color it would be. I eventually chose purples and blues, green, and white to create my flower, background pattern, and border. I revised my artwork by going back in and adding smaller pieces of glass to give it more detail.
The meaning behind my artwork is a simple flower living a simple life. How my artwork relates to my life is because I love nature and wanted to create another piece that involved nature, so a flower. What I'm most proud of in my artwork is the small details that I added and had the patience to put each piece of glass in one by one. At first, I struggled with placing the pieces of glass with the Elmers glue. But I overcome these struggles by developing techniques such as using a tiny brush or knowing where to place the glue. My artwork could be stronger if I added in even more tiny details, like a blue sky and clouds. But I didn't have enough of those colors to even start filling in the background. Overall, I really love how this piece turned out and I am hoping to work with glass again but using different colors and adding more detail on a smaller glass base next time.
