Ice Cream Sundae

12 inches x 9 inches

In my art you can clearly see an ice cream sundae surrounded by a colorful pattern of dots. The story is a sundae with spinach, carrots, and stink sock sprinkles which is something nobody would want to order. I chose to make this because I was given a prompt which lead me to create a sundae in a fancy glass, a spoon (which is necessary) and a dotted pattern of circles. I made the dotted pattern of circles because I kept making smudges with the oil pastels and covered them up with dots that colored coordinated with the colors on the sundae. This relates to my life because I love ice cream, but if I had to eat a sundae I wouldn't eat this one.

My work was made by looking up photo references so I could remember the basic shape of a sundae. I first sketched out my idea with my pencil. I then went in and started to add color with colored pencils to the top of the sundae first. Then, I colored in the pencil colored areas with oil pastels and continued to go back and forth between both materials. I made sure the glass looked blended with chocolate smudges faded on the inside. Once I finished the sundae itself I went in and added a spoon and a circle pattern to the background. I did this to not only give the piece more of a background but to also cover up the smudges I made with my hand when coloring with the oil pastels.

The process of creating my art was first I created the toppings, then the ice cream, then the cup, and then the background. My project evolved from when I added more of a background, the spoon and dots, to my work. My project also evolved when I went over the sundae with a white oil pastel. The white oil pastel helped me blend everything together so it looked smooth and not rough or lots of lines. My next steps could be add more detail to the sundae. I would go in and make the oil pastels thicker so I could scratch detail into them. I just don't wanna make the background too colorful because then it would take away from the sundae itself and make the art look unbalanced.
