Paper Reflection Sculpture

This assignment was to choose a word that represents your semester, for example I chose growth, and then turn it into an art piece using only paper. The subject of my creation is is a flower growing. The flower represents me growing throughout the school year. My work was made by first sketching out a blob on a piece of paper which was my piece of grass. I then went in and cut out a flower in the middle and made it stand it so the cut out of the flower represented it's shadow. I then went in and added details to the flower by building up pieces of paper to the center to make it pop out more. I also went in and added grass to the ground around the flower.

I chose to create this specific artwork because I love nature and so as soon as I chose the word growth I instantly thought of a flower growing. It’s arranged by having the flower in the middle and the cut out is the shadow and that fills up a lot of the ground. How my project evolved was I kept adding pieces of paper shaped like pedals to the center of the flower and slowly the flower came to life. I revised my artwork by fixing up some of the edges of the cuts that I made, I also went in and tried to add more detail to the flower and to the ground in order to make it the way I liked. I think I could've added more details next time and use a different technique to make my work more stable.

The meaning behind my artwork is that there is a flower growing and that flower represents my growth throughout this year. How my artwork relates to my life is I love nature and I think I have grown and learned a lot this year so I wanted to incorporate both of those into one piece of art work. What I'm most proud of in my artwork is the flower because I kept adding detail and I like how it turned out. I struggled with making the flower stand up and have it be stable. But I overcome these struggles by going in and adding more paper to keep the flower up and stop it from falling over. My artwork could be stronger if I added more pieces of paper or added grass all throughout the ground around the flower. But overall, I like how my flower turned out.
