Wenk graduated from MHS in 1950 and lettered for three years in track, basketball and football, plus one year in golf. He averaged 14.2 points per basketball game during his senior year in high school and 10 points a game over his total career. He was also a quarterback, running back and the punter on the MHS football team. Wenk's high school coach was Bill Hauge, assisted by E.A. Southmayd. Wenk participated in the half-mile relay, mile relay, 100-yard dash, 220-yard dash and his favorite, the 440-yard dash. Wenk also played American Legion baseball as a pitcher and catcher.
