Tammy Sterzinger

Sterzinger was a 1988 graduate of MHS. Her high school career included active membership in the Spirit of Madison Band, M-Club, National Honor Society and athletics. Her junior and senior sports years literally filled scrapbooks. In her senior year, Sterzinger and her teammates had an outstanding run. The Lady Bulldogs finished third in the State A Girls' Basketball Tournament after winning the Big Eight Conference title. Sterzinger and her fellow Lady Dogs followed that performance with a conference championship in volleyball and then a sixth-place finish at the State A Girls' Track Meet. Individually, she was an All-Big Eight selection in basketball in both her junior and senior seasons. Sterzinger earned a spot on the "A" All-State's third team, the Argus Leader's Elite 15 and became the all-time leading career scorer and rebounder in Lady Dog girls' basketball history. Those records stood for eight seasons. Sterzinger was a two-time three-sport letter-winner, a three-time girls' basketball most valuable player, four-time track most valuable athlete and MHS female athlete in 1988. On the track, Sterzinger won the State A long jump and triple jump. She won the Gold Medal in those events at the state meet, signifying these were the best jumps in all three classes. That was the first time, before or since, an MHS female trackster won double golds at the state meet. She still holds the school record in the long jump and set the State A all-time record in the triple jump at 37-feet, 1 inch. Sterzinger went on to star in both basketball and track at Southwest State University in Marshall, Minn. While there, she set numerous scoring records for the Lady Mustangs in basketball and qualified for the NAIA National Track Meet in both jumps.
