Halseth, a 1961 MHS graduate, was an all-state football pick and a second-leading scorer in the Eastern South Dakota Conference during his senior season. Halseth was a captain of the Dogs gridirion unit. In track-and-field competition, Halseth was a member of two record-setting relay foursomes. His mile relay team set a 3:26.9 record that lasted for five years. In the medley relay, Halseth had his feet in the quartet setting new state meet record. "We won both relays two years in a row at the state meet," proudly states Halseth. "And those came in my junior and senior seasons with (Ray) Thomas, Doug Fields and Roger Olson." As a hoopster, Halseth was the ESD's third-leading scorer one season and was the team's captain. After graduating from Madison, Halseth went to college at what is now Dakota State University. As a football-playing Trojan, Halseth earned All-S.D. Intercollegiate Conference honors. For 35 years, Halseth was a teacher and coach until his retirement last year. His coaching assignments included football and wrestling. Prior to retirement, Halseth contributed both in the classroom and at sports venues for Brandon Valley schools the last 25 years.
