Dean Koster

Fresh out of SDSU, Dean started his teaching and coaching career at Madison High School which included 17 years as head football coach, 13 years freshmen football coach, 6 years head boys’ golf coach, 30 years as assistant basketball coach at the 9th and 10th grade levels. Dean had a number of teams that we very competitive in the top conference in South Dakota, the ESD and in 1978 the Bulldogs lost to Yankton 14-13 for the conference championship. He coached several all-state football players and many went on to play college football, of which seven of them are in the MHS Hall of Fame. Dean was a standout football and baseball player at SDSU from 1959-1962 where he was named NCC all-conference in ’61 and ’62 when he lead the NCC in passing and total offense and the team MVP in ’62. Dean was awarded the prestigious Ralph Ginn Award for excellence in coaching award from SDSU in 1981. Dean and Mary Ann have 2 children; Todd (Wendy), a 2002 MHS Hall of Famer and Michelle (Brian) along with 5 grandchildren (Aaron, Ryan, Mari, Kami, and Brody).
