Gary Johnson

Growing up near Winfred and going to school there with his 14 brothers and sisters didn’t allow Gary or his siblings to participate in sports, however they starting going to Madison in Gary’s 8th grade year. Gary’s athletic career is very well understood for those sports fans in the late 60’s and early 70’s, but to some maybe not so much. Gary became a starter on the football team as a sophomore and never really looked back. 3 year starter (both ways as a senior, which was rare then), and as a senior he was the Co-Captain, MVP, All-State, Elite 30 (now it is 45) not to mention the smallest team in the ESD and was 2nd in the conference. Icing on the cake was that he was also voted Homecoming King. Although he only wrestled just one year and qualified for the State Tournament as well as lettering 3 years in T&F. Continued his football career at Dakota State where he started for 3 years and was a member of the Boothill Bowl which DSC won 23-20.
