There are few people who have done more for the Madison Athletics than “Mr. Mat.” After moving to Madison to from his hometown of Somerville, Massachusetts, Mike graduated from DSU and took a job teaching job in Madison in 1973. He stayed right here in Madison for his entire 40-year teaching career.
In addition to teaching, Mr. Mat had a 44-year coaching career at Madison. He coached 5th & 6th grade boys and girls basketball and track at the old Lincoln Elementary School. After moving to middle school, Mike coached middle school football, boys and girls basketball, and track in some capacity for 33 years.
Mike was hired as the assistant boys/freshman boys basketball coach in 1997 and coached in that position for 20 years. During that time, he guided his freshman teams to several undefeated seasons and was an important part of the MHS State Championship Basketball Teams in 2009, 2010, 2013 & 2014. Coach Materese was also named Region 2 Assistant Coach of the Year on two different occasions.
In addition to coaching, Mike has served as the “Voice of the Bulldogs” as an announcer for the football team the last 15 years. He has also been the “Official Book” for both the boys and girls basketball teams for the last 30 years. Mike continues in both of these roles to this day. All in all, Mike has worked or helped out the Madison Athletic department in one role or another for the past 50 years!
In addition to his roles with the Madison Athletic Department, Mike currently works as a part-time painter for DeCurtins painting. Him and his wife Jane have two children, Carrie & Jimmy, and 6 grandchildren – Eden, Lyla, Maddox, Guerlineda, Fleurina & Guyto.
