The High School student support program encompasses all aspects of a student's learning experience in the High School. Support to students is provided in the the following domains:
Academic support - Learning Support (LS), EAL, tutoring, classroom experiences
Social and emotional support
Mental and physical well-being
College application process and placement
Transition
Family Therapy
This team, comprised of all High School Counselors, the Language and Learning Specialists, the School Psychologist, MS/HS School Therapist, and members of the High School Administration team meets regularly to review cases of students experiencing difficulties, which may be academic, social or emotional in nature. The task of this group is to discuss ways to help individual students find solutions to different issues. Teachers, counselors, school psychologist, school therapist, and administrators can refer students to the Student Support Team.
There are two options for tutoring in addition to the support provided by classroom teachers:
National Honor Society students tutor their peers in most subjects. NHS tutors can be found in the Study Hall room at the beginning of each period. A list of tutors and subjects per class period can be found in the Counseling Office.
The Counseling Office do not personally endorse the tutors (they are for parent/student reference only).
The JIS University Advising program begins in freshman year and culminates in senior year. Our program provides numerous group sessions, highly individualized course and career planning meetings, before school student workshops as well as seminar events designed for parents. The program is designed to inform and educate our students and families, and to offer multiple opportunities to better know our students.
Here at JIS we only write confidential letters of recommendation. University recommendations are stored in a software program used for all university applications. This program stores confidential letters, creating a permanent record of all recommendations. For letters that must be mailed or faxed instead of or in addition to being sent electronically, they can be given directly to the student’s counselor and the counselor will make appropriate arrangements to secure the confidentiality of the recommendation as well as its timely arrival.
The counselors in the HS counseling department know that things do not always go smoothly for students and there are times throughout the academic year when pressure builds and stress can become a burden. Our counselors have much experience to help students sort things out when lives get complicated or when a ‘listening ear’ is required. Also assisting our counselors, students and parents are the MS/HS psychologist and MS/HS therapist who are professionally trained to help students and parents with a wide range of situations.
