Detention, Suspension and Loss of Senior Privilege

Detention

If a student is assigned a detention following our Behavioural Consequences policy, they will be assigned a detention after school. If a student receives an after school detention mandatory attendance is required and will take precedent over any other after school commitments. The detention will be supervised by a faculty member.

Failure to attend detention is a serious matter and will result in a tripling of outstanding detentions or a Saturday detention and may lead to a suspension.

Detention Expectations are Here

Saturday Detention

If a student is assigned a Saturday detention following our Behavioural Consequences policy, they will be assigned this detention on a given Saturday from 8.00am - 12:00pm. These detentions are supervised by a faculty member.

This is a mandatory support structure, so the expectation is that students are in the library before 8am. When planning your departure time, it would be wise to account for traffic and any other unexpected events. Failure to attend a Saturday detention is a serious matter and will result in a suspension.

What To Bring:

  • Student ID

  • Laptop and charger / necessary materials to work on

  • A snack and water bottle

The expectations are that you will work quietly, be disconnected from any social media/apps/etc., and ask for permission to step outside the library for any reason.

Suspensions in the High School

Definition

*A suspension is a temporary removal of a student from classes for a violation of school policies or values. A suspension may be ‘internal’ or ‘out of school’.

Internal Suspension

An ‘internal suspension’ removes a student from the classroom for a period of time, while still allowing students to attend school and complete their work while being monitored by school staff in the High School Office. Students are given breaks that are not aligned with other students and if on internal suspension, students must leave campus at 3:00 pm. They are not allowed to attend any co-curricular event after school.

Out-of-School Suspension

An ‘out of school’ suspension removes a student from the campus for a period of time, the student does not attend school and will complete their work while being supervised at home.

Suspended students (internal or out of school) may not attend any co-curricular activity whilst under suspension from school.

Students suspended are not subject to academic penalties for work missed due to suspension.

Role of counsellor during/following a suspension

Any student who is suspended (internal or out of school) will meet with their counsellor during the suspension time or on their return to school. Each student who is suspended is required to complete a Reflection this reflection will be shared with the students' counsellor and will guide some of this meeting. This meeting and reflection will be recorded to power school - the counsellor will add this information to power school.

Notification of Suspensions to Universities and Withdrawal of Recommendations

This policy recognizes that some (where specified) internal suspensions are not reported to universities. Other suspensions are recorded and some universities/colleges require the school to reveal this as part of their application process.

Some teachers may choose to withdraw their recommendation letter if the student for whom they have written the letter, is involved in an incident of academic misconduct.

Loss of Senior Privilege

Senior Privilege is exactly that - a privilege that is bestowed upon students when they reach their senior year. However, for a student to be given Senior Privilege, they must be in good standing with the Code of Ethics and Conduct in the High School to receive this privilege automatically.

Some consequences listed above will result in the immediate removal of Senior Privilege (if the offender is a senior) for a period of time.

A Freshman, Sophomore or Junior who receives a suspension (internal or out of school) during these years will have their Senior Privilege removed for one quarter for each suspension, when they become a Senior.
