2.     A student is required to complete eight semesters 7 of attendance in a recognized high school and fulfill HIS graduation requirements as listed above in order to achieve the JIS High School Diploma.

3.     A student enrolled in a support class can override required credits as approved by the SST.

4.     0.5 credit will be granted for a course completed in a school which is on a 3 term schedule.

5.     We allow for special waivers for credit in unusual situations as approved by the SST .

English 4 credit requirement: waiver policy

Important Notes

a) Indonesian students in grades 9 and 10 must be enrolled in Indonesian Language, Literature and Civics (LLC) courses; LLC 1 for Grade 9 and LLC2 for Grade 10 (SPK regulations).  These courses will serve as credits for Modern Languages.

b) Indonesian students in Grades 11 and 12 have the choice to take LLC3 and LLC4 OR they may fulfill the Indonesian SPK requirement by enrolling in either IB Indonesian B or IB Indonesian A.  Students who choose the IB Indonesian courses will fulfill their civics requirement through a separate course. Either IB or LLC courses will serve as credit for Modern Languages

c) All Indonesian students will also be required (SPK regulations) to study religion based on the Indonesian Religious curriculum (according to their registered religious denomination). We ask that each student register through our Indonesian Educational Program (IEP) office to organise their religion course.

d) Indonesian National examinations are sat in Grade 9 and Grade 12. The results of the National exams will not be included on JIS transcripts or reports. Retakes are possible. In grade 12 students will choose IPS (Social Studies) or IPA (Sciences). The structure for the National Exam will be: 1. Bahasa Indonesia, 2. English, 3. Mathematics, 4. Social Studies or Science.

e) If a student fails to gain a semester of credit for one or both components of an LLC course, or an IB Indonesian course, they may appeal to the VP for Curriculum and Learning for a waiver of credit.  Deliberation will be made on a case by case basis taking into account the student’s language background, attendance and level of application.

2. Modern Languages for (Non Indonesian) EAL or LS students

a) Modern Languages for Non Indonesian LE or LS students

Modern Language classes are not mandatory for Grade 9 or Grade 10 students who are enrolled in Academic English classes or Learning Strategies classes in that year of study.

b) Modern Languages for Indonesian Students who wish to study an additional language to Bahasa

Indonesian students who wish to study an additional language to Bahasa, that they intend to study at the IB Level, will only need to achieve a minimum of 1.0 credits of Creative Arts and 1.5 credits of PE/Health to meet graduation requirements.

3.    4.0 credits

4.0 credits is the minimum for an Indonesian student enrolling in the High School at the start of Grade 9.  If an Indonesian student joins the High School after Grade 9, then the credits are achieved through a combination of the Modern Language studied prior to joining JIS and the remaining credits of LLC or IB Indonesian. In a rare situation where a student has not studied any foreign language prior to joining JIS, then a waiver request (see above) should be lodged with the High School Administration.

4.    PE/Health

Minimum PE/Health credits must be completed by the end of Grade 10 if the student enters the High School in Grade 9.  Credits may be waived for students who join the High School after the first semester of Grade 9.

5.      Indonesian Studies for non-Indonesian students

Please see all relevant information regarding Indonesian Studies on the relevant page here

6.    JISCAS & IBCAS for IB Diploma students

Please refer to this document for more details about this graduation requirement.

7.   What constitutes a ‘semester’ of High School?

A ‘semester’ is usually achieved by a student when they have:

a) Been enrolled at JIS for a majority of a calendared semester

b) Attended more than 50% of school days as per our school calendar

c) Made up the equivalent of a semester of study (i.e. similar number of courses studied and passing at time of departure) if they have been enrolled in another High School prior to enrolling at JIS during the semester and the combined attendance & learning data is deemed satisfactory.  Home schooling will not normally be considered the equivalent of High School, unless there are exceptional circumstances. Some online courses may receive credit but they will need to have been through a reputable organisation and we must approve any credit.
