The High School Valedictorian is selected as follows:
Criterion #1.
Unweighted GPA for Grades 11 and 12 for IB, AP courses only is calculated (with at least 6 IB/AP courses in the calculation).
If this fails to place a student in clear first (Valedictorian) and second place (for Salutatorian) to two decimal places (eg: 4.25 and 4.23) then awarding two Valedictorians and no Salutatorian will be considered (eg: 2 students on 4.25, next student on 4.23).
Alternatively the following is applied to differentiate a “tie” (eg: three or more students on 4.25):
Criterion #2.
Predicted grades for semester 2 (JIS letter grades for IB/AP courses) are added to the above GPA calculation
Clear result (e.g 4.2 and 4.3)?
If not then the following are applied in sequence until a clear result is obtained:
Criterion #3.
A point score is applied to each IB, AP course in grade 11 and 12 and the total used. Each AP/HL = 5 and SL = 3
eg:
Student A
Grade 11: 3 HL, 3 SL and ToK = 27
Grade 12: same...Total = 54
Student B
Grade 11: 4 AP, 2 SL =26
Grade 12: 5 AP, 2 SL = 31...Total = 57
Highest point score = Valedictorian, 2nd highest = Salutatorian
Important notes:
From Academic Year 20/21, four higher levels are not part of a standard diploma, and in order to ensure a level ‘playing field,’ there will be no direct or indirect advantage given to students with four HL courses being considered for valedictorian or other academic awards.
Criterion #4.
Grade 10 included in GPA calculations
Criterion #5.
Administrative decision based on all evidence available, including dispositions, contributions to co-curricular program, service learning program, leadership etc.
Please note - Academic or other malpractice at any time during the student’s enrollment in the High School automatically disqualifies a student from receiving this award.
