The High School utilizes a rotating schedule with five instructional periods per school day. (See the daily schedule below.) Please pay special attention to your Google calendar and calendars printed in the Daily Bulletin, Weekly Thursday Bulletin and JISNet, as they provide guidance from week to week on where to be when.
Students in Grade 9 and 10 should have 9 courses, all of which meet 5 times over a 10-day period. One of these 9 courses is a personal and social education/supervised study course SLA (Supported Learning and Advisory) the other 8 are chosen by the student during course selection in March. The sole exception to this are the G10 AP courses that meet 6 times eg: AP World History or AP Seminar. Important note: G10 students can only take 1 6 block AP class.
Grades 11 and 12 will normally take 7 or 8 courses depending on the mix of subjects. IB Higher Level courses and AP courses will meet 6 times over a 10-day period, while most other courses will meet 4 times over the same period. SL classes will meet for 5 blocks over the two-week cycle.
For most, the minimum number of times a student should be in a class is 34 periods out of 50 over the 10 day cycle, and the maximum is 45 out of 50. As a general rule, no student can take more than 5 AP courses, or 5 HL courses (or a mix of 5 IB HL and AP) in any one year. Students are not permitted to have a “full schedule” (i.e. all students should have an Honor Pass*). Any designated grade level common blocks do not count towards block counts.
Instructional classes commence at 7:30 AM each day except Friday, when classes commence at 8:20 AM. The exception to this Friday is late start is our religion classes for Indonesian students. Students who have Honor Pass(es) for the first period(s) of the day need to arrive at school in time for their first instructional class or if there is a meeting scheduled. Any students who are late for an instructional class must first report to the Attendance Officer, explaining or verifying their late arrival.
JIS is a closed campus during regular school hours, from 7:30 AM to 3:00 PM. This means once a student has arrived on campus, no student may exit the campus unless they are exercising Senior Privilege (see below) or have permission from their parent(s) or guardian(s) to do so. This permission will need to be validated by a signed note, email or phone call. Seniors may not leave campus if their Honor Pass falls between two instructional classes.
All classes will end at 3:00 PM. The only students who may leave campus before this time are students exercising Senior Privilege or those with parent/guardian permission. Students may remain on campus to attend clubs or co-curricular activities. Late buses are available for students involved in these activities.
The High School will conduct grade level (GLA) or whole school assemblies on every other (second) Friday. On an Assembly Day, a 30-minute assembly is added commencing at 11:50 AM. The school calendar will indicate which days are assembly days.
The master schedule provides all students with at least one free period every two days in addition to the breaks. The student has an Honor Pass during this free period, when the student is free to study or attend to personal affairs without having to report to a classroom or staff member. During this time, a student must follow all school rules and regulations.
The school trusts that each student will use this time wisely and appropriately. From time to time, counselors and/or administrators may call students to meetings during Honor Pass when such meetings are required. Failure to report will result in an ‘unverified absence' as previously defined under High School Attendance Policy.
The objectives of the Honor Pass are:
Help students become self-directed, increase student’s opportunity to use the library or fine arts facilities and to begin homework assignments during the day.
Provide an opportunity for students to work cooperatively on assignments and projects.
Allow students to learn to accept the consequences of their decisions.
Permit students to interact with other students outside the regular classroom environment.
Encourage students to meet with teachers for discussions about class work.
Free students to engage in co-curricular activities or projects (e.g. fundraising, club business).
Provide time for students to assist teachers.
Provide time to meet with counselors to discuss plans relating to schedule, career and/or college plans.
Senior Privilege is a privilege negotiated between the Senior Class and the High School Administration. It is granted to seniors in good disciplinary standing who have Honor Pass(es) for the beginning or last period(s) of the day. Written parental approval in support of early departure must be provided before the privilege is granted. When leaving early, senior students with this privilege must sign out with the Attendance Officer before 12:00 noon and show their exit pass to security when exiting campus. Senior students who leave campus early may return to campus for co-curricular activities.
The success and integrity of Senior Privileges depend wholly on seniors’ adherence to the stated conditions and agreements with the High School Administration. Senior Privileges do not apply on days with special schedules or when assemblies are held. The Administration will revoke senior privileges if they are abused or if other breaches of the Student Code of Conduct occur.
