This is a process by which the Vice Principal of Curriculum and Learning monitors student’s progress towards meeting Graduation Requirements. The aim is to ensure a student is eligible to graduate with 24 credits. By monitoring Ds and Fs earned each semester the VP of Curriculum ensures that students, parents, and counselors are aware of academic struggle and that a plan for support is in place.
This process works together with the Student Support model expressed in our Student Support Flow Chart. Using the Student Referral Form, teachers ensure that they are implementing interventions to support struggling students. Following the Student Support Flow Chart above, students receive the level of support that is appropriate for their needs.
A student will not be asked to withdraw from JIS based on poor academic performance alone. However, poor academic performance may result in a student being ineligible to earn a JIS High School Diploma.
The purpose of the communication between the VP Curriculum and counselor is to determine if a support plan is in place for the student. In most cases students in these circumstances are already receiving support within our student support processes. If no support plan exists, one will be developed collaboratively among counselor, family, and VP Curriculum.
The VP Curriculum will contact the student’s counselor under any of the following circumstances:
Student earns 2DS or 1F or worse in a semester
Student fails a course tied to graduation requirements
Failing to engage with this process
Students who do not engage with the support plans developed through this process may be recommended for withdrawal under the following conditions:
Student does not engage with or agree to the support plan developed with counselor
Excessive absences
Continued disengagement during class time
Continued lack of completion of assigned work.
