According to our Graduation Requirements, all students who are not Indonesian passport holders must undertake a semester course of Indonesian Studies during their time at JIS once in the High School regardless of whether or not they have completed Indonesian Studies in our Middle School or other Schools. As a school in Indonesia, under the auspices of the Ministry of Education (MoE), we are committed to students completing this course, particularly as it is a legal requirement. It is an exception that this graduation requirement is waived and waivers for this are highly unlikely to be granted.
Students may fulfil this graduation requirement in a variety of ways:
Indonesian Ab Initio: Two year course for Grades 11/12. Modern Languages Credit which also satisfies the MoE Indonesian studies requirement.
Indonesian B SL: Two year course for Grades 11/12. Modern Languages Credit which also satisfies MoE Indonesian studies requirement
Indonesian B HL: Two year course for Grades 11/12. Modern Languages Credit which also satisfies MoE Indonesian studies requirement
Indonesian 1,2,3, 4: One year courses for all Grade levels. A Modern Languages Credit which also satisfies MoE Indonesian studies requirement
Regular Indonesian Studies: A semester course for all Grade Levels. Satisfies the MoE Indonesian Studies Requirement. No automatic Modern Languages Credit credit due to the course being only 60% language but as is already the case students may appeal for the 0.5 ML credit to admin if they need it to graduate. In cases like this High School admin reserve the right to request additional language work/project etc as part of the appeal.
Indonesian Studies: Art and Culture 1: A semester course for all Grade Levels. A Creative Arts credit which also satisfies MoE Indonesian Studies requirement. This course cannot be used as an ML credit as it is the Indonesian Studies equivalent of Drawing and Painting 1.
Indonesian Studies: Art and Culture 2: A semester course for all Grade Levels. A Creative Arts credit which also satisfies MoE Indonesian Studies requirement. This course cannot be used as an ML credit as it is the Indonesian Studies equivalent of Drawing and Painting 2.
Indonesian Studies: Carving and Crafts 1: A semester course for all Grade Levels. A Creative Arts credit which also satisfies MoE Indonesian Studies requirement. This course cannot be used as an ML credit as it is the Indonesian Studies equivalent of Design and Technology 1.
Successful completion of the course for any of these options between Grades 9 and 12 will satisfy the Graduation Requirement.
While highly unusual, a waiver to not take Indonesian Studies might be granted IF any of the following criteria are deemed to be satisfied:
If a student transfers to JIS High School after Grade 10 and there is no opportunity in student’s remaining academic program to include Indonesian Studies because:
The student is taking a full load of courses that are deemed as essential - meaning they are required for Graduation or are essential for College entry, or a particular course of study within a college or university, and Indonesian Studies cannot be included into their schedule. In these cases students will have the opportunity to take an Indonesian Studies Independent Study in Grade 12 to satisfy the requirement.
OR
If a student is not intending to graduate from JIS, he or she is not required to undertake the course. The student must communicate this intention to the High School Administration or their counselor and this intention will be recorded in the student's school records.
The Waiver Process
If a student wishes for a waiver to be granted to not complete the Indonesian Studies Course and still meet Graduation Requirements, he or she must first meet with his or her counselor to discuss the request for waiver.
If, after meeting with the counselor, the student still wishes to request a waiver, a course waiver form must be completed and signed by both the student and counselor as record of the waiver request approval. The waiver request will be discussed by the High School Administration team who will notify the student and counselor of the result of their appeal for waiver. Any waiver granted will be recorded in the student’s records. In keeping with our self-advocacy philosophy, waiver requests should involve the student directly at some stage in the process advocating for themselves either in writing or verbally.
