Attendance & Academic Eligibility

Team Attendance Expectations

The minimum attendance requirement for a high school sport is 80% of practices and games in order to receive letter and transcript recognition, as well as to be eligible for end of season tournaments and end of year awards.

Student-athletes are to give 24 hours notice to their coaches prior to them missing a practice or game to assist with planning and logistics. This is in order to assist the coaching staff for planning purchases and does not excuse a missed

If injured, an athlete must report to the school physiotherapist for assessment. Once an injury rehabilitation plan has been put in place, athletes are required to be at practice completing rehabilitation or assisting in the running of the practice.

In the event an athlete does not make the 80% attendance requirement and there are extenuating circumstances, an athlete may lodge an appeal with the HS Athletics Coordinator. The appeal process and final decision on eligibility will lie with the HS Athletics Coordinator and HS Administration

School Attendance Policy

In order to participate in a game or practice, a student must be in attendance for at least 2 full periods of the school day.

If students are unable to participate in Physical Education they may not practice on that day.

Academic Eligibility for High School teams

Students participating in activities such as Varsity and Junior Varsity Athletics are required to maintain a satisfactory academic standing in all classes. Essentially, this policy is “effort driven” and does not specify a particular G.P.A., etc. Students may be ineligible under certain circumstances, even if there are no failing grades.

If a student is receiving ample assistance and still not maintaining a satisfactory academic standing, teachers will communicate with a coach to help provide additional support. This may include prior to, during, and/or after IASAS events. In extreme cases, a meeting can even be arranged with the student, the coach, the teacher and the Athletics Coordinators to work on a plan to bring academic work up to an acceptable level.

Before traveling on exchanges or tournaments, the athletics/activities coordinator will email all staff a list of students who will be traveling. All traveling student-athletes are expected to see teachers before their absence. Students are responsible for all work missed while away, and use "Student Assignment Reminder Form" to help with their organization.

In the majority of cases, this process will help the students to bring their academic course work up to an acceptable level and allow them to continue to participate. However, there will also be instances when continued participation will be denied. Exceptions must be approved by the Principal, Athletic Coordinator and the student’s guidance counselor in consultation with the coach.
