The aims of the drug testing program are preventative in nature and designed to help students make wise decisions about illegal substances. Drug test screeners are performed on campus and sent to partner laboratories in Australia for processing. Confidential results are accessed through a database maintained by the laboratory by the Assistant Principal for Student Life and Well-being.
All parents/guardians of HS students are required to sign the Policy of JIS Regarding Drug Abuse form at the time of admission and at annual re-enrollment.
Our school community has firm expectations that our students are drug-free and respectful of drug laws and policies. Any student may be subject to a search of their personal possessions or lockers, at any time. All tests or searches will be conducted under the direction of the High School Administration. Parents and students are reminded of the serious consequences that violations of this policy may have for the student’s family and his/her future academic career. Any student found to be in possession of, taking, being under the influence of, buying or selling, giving or trafficking, or in any way directly or indirectly aiding or abetting the propagation of any narcotics, stimulants, barbiturates, suppressants, hallucinogenic drugs, or marijuana is subject to expulsion from school.
Any student may be required to do a saliva or hair follicle test at any time while under the jurisdiction of the school.
The bulk of testing is random, but JIS reserves the right to test specific students with reasonable cause. Refusal to take a drug test shall be treated as a positive result. If a student confides in a JIS counselor about drug-related problems, the information shared is treated with respect and confidentiality. If there is a concern about safety, however, the information cannot be kept confidential and we will work together with the appropriate members of our community – parents, school administrators, doctors, and embassies – to ensure the safety of all students.
Any student who has received a positive test result from the screener will be required to have a family meeting. During this meeting, a discussion will take place to identify the most appropriate next actions to confirm the results of testing.
If it is deemed necessary to perform a confirmation test, a hair follicle test will be performed and sent to the lab facility in Australia. If a hair follicle test is refused, the student will be treated as a positive result. If the hair follicle test result is positive, the HS administration will convene a conference with the student’s parent/guardian to construct a plan to ensure the student’s well-being and safety.
