At JIS, we highly value student self-advocacy. We believe developing self-advocacy at school helps build self-confident, resourceful adults who can work well with others. Alongside this self-advocacy approach come certain student rights, and similarly, with these rights come responsibilities that we expect from all of our young dragons. The presentation to students below is given at the start of each academic year, and there are FAQs below it.

There may be classes that are full, but it would be good to check your Semester 2 first, as often you did get into the class, but not until Semester 2.
Dangerous articles are prohibited on campus and at school-sponsored activities. Such articles will be confiscated and students possessing them may be subject to suspension or expulsion, depending on the circumstances and nature of the article. Articles considered dangerous include, but are not limited to; knives, firecrackers, air or toy guns, as well as explosives and firearms. The throwing of water balloons, eggs, and other projectiles is also prohibited.
High School students are expected to follow the instructions of teachers and Administration at all times. In cases where students have deliberately failed to follow instructions given by faculty, they will be referred to the Associate Principal for Student Affairs. Infractions may result in detention, while patterns of disobedience may result in suspension and possible recommendation for withdrawal.
Students may not chew gum in classrooms and may only consume food or drink in classrooms with their teacher’s approval or for special school-approved parties or meetings. Food in classrooms is not considered a regular part of the classroom activity.
As policy, no food or drinks (other than water) are to be taken into, or consumed within our High School Gymnasium facilities.
* Please note, due to the risk of harming others who may have food allergies, we advise students not to bring food to school to share with their class that contains nuts.
In the High School we value appropriate use of areas such as our cafeteria and library. These areas are designed for face-to-face communication, eating and study. Using these areas to participate in online gaming is in contradiction of our core values of Respect, Responsibility and Balance. Therefore using school bandwidth for gaming purposes in these areas is not allowed and consequences will be enacted in such instances.
JIS has a beautiful campus but litter occasionally becomes a problem. It is hoped that each class/grade level will be responsible for the huts they occupy. Waste receptacles are provided for the sanitary control of litter. Students who litter may be subject to detention.
In cases where a hut is deemed to contain excessive litter, the hut may be closed until the occupants clean the hut and make restitution to avoid excessive litter in the future. Grade level leaders of the hut involved will need to meet with the Associate Principal for Student Life or the HS Principal to discuss a plan to ensure tidiness of the hut in the future. The hut will remain closed until this meeting has occurred. In the event that the grade level does not display appropriate responsibility for the cleanliness of their hut, it will be opened for general use amongst other grade levels.
It is not appropriate for any spitting to occur on the JIS campus, this is a habit which is considered a 'dirty' habit and may spread diseases.
Because so many cultures and age groups coexist at JIS, it is important that students demonstrate an attitude and behavior regarding interpersonal relationships that are acceptable to people of various cultural and ethnic backgrounds. The school recognizes that genuine feelings of affection may exist between students; however, public displays of such affection on campus are not acceptable. Students should refrain from inappropriate behavior such as intimate and prolonged embraces, kissing, and similar actions offensive to the general public on campus, on school transportation, and at school events.
If students engage in intimate or sexual behavior in private locations on campus e.g. bathrooms, mandatory meetings will be arranged with counselors and parents will be informed. If this type of behavior is repeated, it may lead to suspension or expulsion from school.
Students are required to provide their name and/or ID number when requested. Failure to do so, or providing false information when requested, will be dealt with according to policies related to disobedience and providing false information.
The following substances are deemed as prohibited on our campus or during school events for legal, health and safety reasons; this policy also applies to school transportation
Tobacco
The school cannot philosophically condone a practice that is hazardous to the health and safety of a student and those around him/her. Therefore, use of tobacco products on campus or at school activities is prohibited at all times. Students smoking or chewing tobacco or found in possession of tobacco on campus or at school activities are subject to sanctions.
E-cigarettes
The use of E-cigarettes (also known as Vapes) is prohibited at all times on campus, at school activities or on school transportation.
Alcohol
Students may not possess, consume or be under the influence of alcohol on campus at any time or at any school-sponsored activity or trip. “Under the influence” is strictly interpreted to mean affected in any way by the consumption of alcohol, no matter how small the quantity. Alcohol and substance abuse violations are cumulative from year to year.
Illegal or Synthetic Drugs
Any illegal drug (including synthetic drugs), or drug that has not been prescribed by a doctor for a student, or approved by the school for medication purposes, is not allowed to be consumed, sold or provided, nor are students permitted to be under the influence (similar definition as above) of this drug, on campus or at any school-sponsored activity or trip.
Students who are taking approved medication must not, under any circumstances, share or provide this medication to another student.
Students must not submit dishonest information to teachers, staff or administration, either on behalf of themselves or their parents. This includes false verbal information, forged signatures, dishonest letters or emails sent from their own or their parents’ accounts as well as modifications to notes from other teachers or the Nurse’s Hut.
In the case where a parent submits false information on behalf of their child, the matter will be referred to the administration for adjudication.
