Students should not be mandated to perform dynamic actions by faculty request.
While general guidelines regarding shorts are stated as ⅓ of the thigh, the focus of the enforcement is meeting the essence of the basic principles above (i.e. whether the coverage of undergarments and essential body parts are met).
Upon the enforcement of the policy, faculty members shall not:
Require students to display their body in front of others (students, parents, or staff) in school at any time, whether part of policy enforcement or not.
“Shame” the student which includes, but is not limited to:
measuring straps or shorts or skirt length;
confronting, addressing, or directing students in front of others;
accusing students of “distracting” other students with their clothing
Upon the enforcement of the policy, faculty members shall:
Always prioritize the comfort of the student.
Use language such as:
“Your top should touch your bottoms”
“Your clothing is not fully meeting the coverage requirements in the dress code”
If the student raises a question about the judgment of the faculty member, the student shall be directed to either the particular section of the dress code being violated, or the relevant administrator.
In the event that a student is dress coded without following the proper procedure or any of the enforcement guidelines are not followed, the student who was dress coded will be notified that it has been addressed by the administrator to the teacher, but will not be exempt from the consequences of the violation itself.
Please note: Students without suitable alternative clothing on the day they are observed breaking dress code will be required to immediately borrow a suitable item from a friend or the high school office if one is available. Otherwise, they will be asked to purchase suitable clothing from the Booster Hut and wear it for the rest of the day.
1st Instance: Verbal reminder and reflection of dress code expectations, warning logged in Powerschool, and the student finds a suitable alternative.
2nd Instance: Verbal reminder to student and the student finds a suitable alternative, followed by written notification to student and parent of 2nd infraction (from Associate Principal for Student Life and Well-being) with written reflection. Both email and reflection logged in Powerschool.
3rd Instance: Verbal reminder to student and the student finds a suitable alternative, followed by reflection meeting with student, parent, and Associate Principal for Student Life and Well-being to develop a plan moving forward and agree on subsequent consequences.
