Tryouts and team selection

Tryouts and Team Selections for High School teams

Tryouts

Two weeks prior to the tryout dates for the upcoming season, the JIS Athletics Office will send a tryout registration form in Dragon Bites to all High School students. This form is to be filled-in by any interested student wanting to try out for the sports offered in the upcoming season. If a student does not receive this form or fails to register prior to tryouts, they may still attend the tryouts sessions. The registration form is only meant to be a tool that helps the coaches be prepared for the tryouts sessions.

The HS Athletics Tryout Policy is that students are given a minimum three days of tryouts before being selected, or cut, by a program. There is a limit to this policy, that due to the length of the season teams should be selected within 10 days of the first tryout date during the second week of the season. The three day minimum tryout period is not required to be extended past this point. The Athletics Coordinator and the Head Coach of the program will make the decision to extend the tryout period past the 10-day mark by considering all factors.

Students are allowed to try out for multiple sports, and they must contact the Head Coaches of the sports in which they want to try out to make them aware of this choice.  From this point the Head Coaches and the student will make a plan to complete the tryouts.

Non-cut Sports

Each season will have at least one sport in which all students who wish to participate are able to be accommodated at the Varsity and JV level, a non-cut sport. These sports are as follows:

Season 1 - Cross Country

Season 2 - Rugby & Touch

Season 3 - Track and Field.

Team Selections

Students at all grade levels are eligible for selection to all teams regardless of Varsity or Junior Varsity designation. Grade level may be used as a determining factor for team selection only after all other areas for team selection have been measured and determined to be equal.

Example: Underclassmen are eligible for Varsity team selection and Upperclassmen are eligible for Junior Varsity team selection.

During the tryout period coaches will communicate regularly what they are looking for in a team as a whole and in individual players, and their evaluation process for making selections.

The size of team rosters for the regular season is at the discretion of the Coaches with direction given by JIS Athletics that team size should ensure all members of the team:

a) will be given adequate coaching attention and instruction for individual development and understanding.

b) will be given adequate game/competition experience.

Communication of selections

Coaches will communicate the selection of the Varsity, JV or IASAS travel squad through verbal communication during or after practice at the conclusion of the tryout period. At no point will email or physical lists to be pertaining to selections.

Mid-season New Student Participation

In order to support the transition of students transferring to JIS in the middle of a sports season, we will allow these new students to tryout and be selected to teams, including IASAS roster selections, provided certain criteria is met:

a) The incoming student’s family has notified the Athletics Department of their interest to participate in the current sport season during the admission process.

b) The incoming student’s first day of tryouts is no later than two weeks prior to the IASAS team roster selection due date (in most cases this will give four weeks of participation in the sport to the incoming student).

c) Selection to a team will only be made after a session tryout period has been conducted.
