Grade 10 students in JIS AP classes sit mock exams.
Grade 10 students in JIS AP classes usually have their mock exam on Mondays.
Study leave: Grade 10 students do not have to attend classes on the day of their mock exams (or on the study day, in the case that the mock exam is not on Monday).
Summative assessment: Academic assessment for Grade 10 students taking AP exams (other than mock exams) is not permitted during mock exams. Specifically,
On the same day of a mock exam (or on a study day, if applicable) students will not have any other summative assessment due in any other subject.
Similar to IASAS events, all students should also be excused from summative assessments on the day following a mock exam.
Absences: Grade 10 students sitting mock exams will have their absences counted as an excused absence by the school. Teachers will follow the standard make-up policy for missed work or assessments.
1. Final Examinations/Culminating assessments occur at the end of the year in most subjects or at the semester for semester courses. They are a comprehensive, multiple learning goal measure of a student's level of attainment and are summative.
2. Final Exams/Culminating assessments contribute to the final year-long grade and can range from 10% to 15% of the total course grade regardless of how many papers are included.
3. Final Exams/Culminating assessments are usually 90 minutes long, but can be up to 2 hours or more in some subjects.
4. Final Exam/Culminating assessment schedules are placed on JISNet approximately one month before the exam dates.
5. Parents and students are reminded that school ends on the last day of semester two, and all vacation travel plans are expected to come after the official end of the academic year/last day of school.
Final exams/culminating assessments occur only once a year and therefore are a significant part of a student’s learning experience. No "makeup" exams will be given to students who miss the allotted exam session, since exam integrity would be compromised so making the assessment invalid. End of year constraints also preclude makeups.
In keeping with our responsibility to prepare students for the rigours of external examinations and common university policies, our policy on absences for mock exams and end-of-year examinations mirrors that of the International Baccalaureate and the College Board. Absences should be avoided, as end-of-year examinations are an important part of a student's learning journey.
This results in a failing grade for the exam and will be recorded as an academic misconduct.
If students arrive within the exam time and other students have not exited the exam hall, students can sit their exams. If students completely miss the exam due to misreading the exam schedule, this will be recorded as a failing grade for the exam but not as academic misconduct. The school reserves full rights to include that the student did not sit the examination/submit the culminating assessment within the report card comment. This standard disclaimer will read as follows for all subjects:
Student X did not sit the final examination/submit the culminating assessment for this subject.
In case of illness or visa renewal, a doctor's note or supporting visa appointment must be provided along with parent verification or the absence will be regarded as an intentional skipping of the exam. Documentation must be submitted within 24 hours of the absence. This submission will be regarded as an appeal to have a final grade awarded based on their year-long performance that does not include the examination. The administration team will issue a final decision after review. If approved, the final grade will be awarded based on their year-long performance that does not include the examination. The school reserves full rights to include that the student did not sit the examination on medical or visa renewal grounds within the report card comment.
Absent students will initially have the highest failing grade for the exam recorded, but in keeping with our self-advocacy policy, students can appeal to the High School admin for further consideration, outlining the reasons for their appeal. In cases where the appeal is accepted, a final grade is awarded based on the student's year-long performance that does not include the examination. Students with an unverified absence for a subject exam will have the highest failing grade for the exam calculated into their end-of-year grade for that subject, keeping in mind that the exam can count for between 10% and 15% of the end-of-year grade. In all cases, the school reserves the right to record absence from the final examination within the report card comment. High School admin will consider each case of appeal on a case-by-case basis.
In case of any absence for any reason, either verified or unverified, during the exam session or with regards to not submitting culminating assessments, students should contact the Associate Principal for Curriculum and Learning as soon as possible.
