While our main focus always will be the courses offered on our campus, online courses can play an extremely valuable supplementary role in enriching students' academic and social lives.
A student graduating from JIS would have to complete all of the graduation requirements as defined on our documentation. (see “Graduation Requirements”).
In Grades 11/12, six (6-7) JIS courses could be followed, leaving time for online work during the school day.
A student in Grades 9/10 who wants to pursue online courses could take 7 JIS courses, rather than 8, if the following conditions are met:
a written parental request would be required,
approval from the AP Curriculum and Learning is granted for the “8th” course to be waived.
A student taking only 6 credit courses per year would need to pass all courses over 4 years to meet the 24 credits required for graduation.
No credit can be transferred from external online courses to a student’s credit total for the purposes of meeting JIS graduation requirements, nor would such courses appear on JIS transcripts EXCEPT for in the cases below:
Only online courses taken with our sister schools in GOA (Global Online Academy) will receive JIS graduation credit
The only exceptions to the above are:
Official IB courses through Pamoja can receive credit. This typically applies only to Grade 12 transfer students and must be cleared with the IB coordinator who liases with Pamoja.
Online credit recovery through registered providers
Students taking advanced online courses through Johns Hopkins CTY
Aside from the above: Individual courses can be approved on a case by case basis if allowed by HS admin. Students should put forth a proposal to the HS Adminstration with details of the course, its details and justifications on the student's behalf for credit consideration. This may include how the course compares to another existing JIS course.
Our main approved online provider is The Global Online Academy. Relevant information is below:
GOA Academic Calendar-has withdrawal dates etc
Students and parents are reminded that there is an additional cost for Global Online Academy courses.
JIS Course Description Page for GOA (has lots more information)
Registering for GOA: All students are reminded that when registering for GOA courses, they must use their JIS emails to register for the course.
