Limiting Number of 'In class' summative assessments in a Regular School Day
Three summatives policy
As part of our rigorous academic program, summative assessments are a necessary component of the teaching and learning plan. Whilst we strive to avoid overloading students with assessments, from time-to-time, a student may experience more than two summative ‘in class’ assessments on a single day. The following policy is in place to maintain student wellbeing and to enhance performance on these assessments.
Students are not required to take more than 2 ‘in class’ summative assessments in the same school day. These assessments include tests, quizzes etc.
On receipt of notification of a “third” in class assessment on the same day:
the student should immediately send one email that includes all 3 teachers to request that the 3rd summative be rescheduled
the student talk to the teacher concerned and negotiate a new date if they do not want to sit the 'in class summative assessment. Students do not get to choose which summative they wish to reschedule.
if a satisfactory agreement can’t be reached between the teacher and the student, the matter should be referred to the VP Curriculum and Learning who will arbitrate.
If the student does not contact the teacher giving the summative ‘in class assessment’ within 24 hours of it being assigned, the student forfeits the opportunity for consideration under this rule.
Projects, labs and longer assignments
This 'rule' does not apply to summative projects or labs which may be due on this day as it is considered that these have been given over a longer period of time - typically at least one week to complete.
