SAFE, HAPPY, LEARNING, RESPECTFUL
The time has finally come to build our own rockets! Thanks for all your 'building materials' donated from home! They were so useful. Have a look at our finished models and our preparation to get there.
First we drew our rocket plans. We used books to help us.
But we also used our imagination too - these rockets will be blasting into space!
Lots of careful drawing and concentration to get it right.
Then rocket making time!
Great time to explore shapes, textures and what we think will make the best rocket!
Being careful to chose the right shape and box is so important.
Lots of concentration and discussion to get our models just right.
And of course lots of tape to keep it all together.
Everyone was so busy but also committed to making a great rocket the way they want it

We even showed them to Mrs M and told her all about what they could do.
We then had a play with them, launching them off into space.
We had a space station to park our rockets to stay safe while we were doing other things.
Some breakfast club rocket building too.

The jigsaws are really popular just now and give the children the opportunity to work together to complete each puzzle.

Finally, lots of different vehicles.
Some word-searching this week.... We were curious about a sign we see everyday in the nursery so decided to check it out...
This sign caught our eye.
We copied it from the computer and went on a word search round nursery.
First one spotted but more to find.
Using clipboards and pictures, the group matched any sign they saw with the one they had on their board. This supports early literacy and investigating skills.
Mrs M was very helpful. We looked in her office too but found that she didn't have one.
So we made one for her introducing some technology to our learning. Wonder if she will like it?
We have been talking about shapes as we have been playing....

We can match the shapes by colour and size.
and we can even make shapes with our bodies!
We had a look at a square and rectangle to see the differences or similarities. We counted that they both had 4 sides but noticed that the sides of the square were all "the same size"........ we needed to find 4 children that were the same size so we could make our own square.

moving on to a rectangle, it was going to be a bit trickier as the children knew we needed "2 really big sides".......
....luckily we had a couple of members of staff who were happy to help!

so, here we go with 1 side....

.....and 3 sides for the perfect equilateral triangle!
then we started finding shapes everywhere!

How many circles can you count on the table? In total there are 5.......3 plates, one pancake and one perspex circle.
then we made a couple of semi circles when we cut the pancake in half.
now we are moving on to some more complex shapes, we might need a little help here!
we have also found out that our friends at Moltemyrskogen in Norway are also learning about shapes! Some of their words are quite similar to English.
Another week, and more time to spend with these little monkeys... (and bears, and zebras, and giraffes in our zoo!!)
Who knew all these animals were able to work together and be such great friends!
A few of us have some baby brothers and sisters at home and some of us have had some exciting news that we are going to be big sisters! Congratulations to all our wonderful families. Better get some practice in!

Our lovely local Childsmile nurse came to visit to see how we are getting on with brushing our teeth in nursery. We love it when she brings along her pal 'Deano the Dino' too!

The addition of our STEM area in the Ocean Room has peaked the children's curiosity, particularly the measuring tapes, so we decided to measure different areas of the nursery.
It was also pretty good fun to see how far we could stretch our suuuuuper long tape out!
First we measured in the Ocean room.......
and discovered it was 20 metres all round our tables!!!!
Then we measured how long it was from the Ocean room kitchen to the Jungle room kitchen......it was 22.5 meters!!
Then we had to check if inside was the same as outside but guess what....... outside was 24.5 meters...!!!
Design and Construction continues over in the Ocean Room with us planning our animal enclosures carefully, and then moving on to building them! This has been a great process for the children, seeing their plans come to life is just a brilliant way to learn about planning, designing, constructing and adjusting.....

After carefully planning our animal enclosures, we moved on to constructing them out of our little model bricks and one of us even had the idea that we could use our playdough from the morning as 'cement'! Just as well Miss Smith made it too sticky after all...

We soon moved outside... where our mission was to build an even bigger animal enclosure! The children managed to achieve this by themselves, demonstrating wonderful teamwork, and what better reward than to spend all afternoon playing on it.
Teamwork makes the dreamwork!
Now for probably the most exciting part of the week. We were lucky enough to have a visit from Chris from Scottish Exotic Animal Rescue, to tie in with our learning about animals. He brought lots of wonderful creatures for us to meet!
Wow! This is Steve the scorpion!
We discovered only the people that Steve knows can hold him because he has a nasty Sting on his tail..... and if you hold a UV light over Steve....
he glows in the dark!!!!
A terrific tarantula!
Next we met Rosie - She is 20 years old and really quite hairy!!
Rosie was the other animal only Chris could hold as she has quite a temper and might bite!
Mr Macphee got to hold Cherry the corn snake!
Cherry has a very long tongue whuch she uses to smell where her dinner is!!!! She is a constrictor so she wraps herself tightly around her food and eats it whole! - she might look little, but shes actually 5.5ft long!
Wow! Cockroaches!!!
We learnt that the millipedes and the cockroaches work really hard to eat and compost our rubbish! and this helps to make new soil!

Lovely Mildred!
Mildred is a Hermanns tortoise and she is 14 years old! Her favorite food is Strawberries but she is only allowed them as a treat as they are too sugary for her!

The Bearded Dragon who is originally from Australia - he LOVES to eat salad!
After a good look and chat about what the animals eat, how old they are, and where they came from, we were allowed to touch and hold some of the animals. We all did really well being brave and doing really good listening so that we all kept ourselves and the animals safe.
And of course, we always have time for playdough and messy play!!
Look at our kindness jar, it is FULL!
we have filled our kindness jar full of pom poms which means we have all been really kind.........
we have been amazing at tidying up, helping each other, helping the ladies and generally being kind.
and there are no pom poms left in the tin!
When we introduced the kindness jar into the room we had a chat about what could happen when we filled the jar with kindness.....and after a few choices, the vote went to pancakes and chocolate spread. As you can see they went down a storm, although a request has been made for jam next time!
so we emptied the kindness jar ......and we are going to start all over again.
And just like the kindness jar we will see you next week to start learning and playing all over again!
A reminder that nursery is closed to children on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
We re-open on Thursday as normal.
