SAFE, HAPPY, LEARNING, RESPECTFUL
Pizza Express trip
P4/5 had a fantastic morning out at Pizza Express today. We learnt about the different ingredients that are used to create pizza and also had a go at the special step by step process the business uses to create the perfect pizza. We all loved eating our delicious food at our classroom pizza party when we returned to school. Thanks for having us Pizza Express!
Rosshire Engineering
As part of our STEM week activities RSE came to teach us about the water cycle. We were able to see how water is filtered through a scaled model of the gigantic filtration systems and also got to create a paper plate design of the water cycle. Thank you for answering all our questions Rachel and Finlay!
Architect visit
On Wednesday Mr Lilley came in to talk about his carreer as an architect. He showed us some of the different projects he has been involved in and also talked us through the different stages he goes through when designing a new structure. Afterwards he gave us the opportunity to create our own plans using scaled rulers and tracing paper. Thank you for visiting us Mr Lilley- we have lots of budding architects thanks to your visit!
The Elm hunter
This morning we met Euan the Elm hunter. He is a scientist and an author who is on a mission to save Elm trees from a disease that is bringing them colser to endangerment. He explained his job at UHI at helped us understand how we can play our part to help preserve and save more healthy Elm trees. Thank you for visiting us Euan- it was very interesting!
Balloon car experiment
This afternoon, Mp4/5 took part in their first experiment of STEM week. Each pair was tasked to create a car that could be powered by air. The challenge was to see which pair's car could travel the furtherest when tested outside on the walkway. Thank you STEM leaders for helping us have such a great afternoon!
African drumming workshop
Today we had a visit from Mya and Emannuel. They came to share their African culture, traditions and heritage through drumming. We all got to take part using drums that had been made in Morocco. We learned hoe to play them to get the best sound quality, what they are made from and how they are used i their native countries. It was so much fun and very inspiring. Thank you so much for visiting us!
To celebrate the founders of the scouting and Girl guiding movement some of our P4/5 pupils wore their club uniforms. Here they are proudly showing how to make the international promise signs for both movements.
This is a great way to highlight their right to join clubs of interest to them (article 15)
This term P4/5’s topic is Endangered species. We wanted to start learning about endangered animals close to home in Scotland. Every table randomly selected an endangered Scottish animal and then each group allocated jobs from title, researcher, manager and writer to illustrator. We all took our jobs seriously and this has resulted in FANTASTICALLY DETAILED information posters.
A show and tell to remember!
This week we have been delving into our new topic- endangered species. We have been focussing on a new skill called note taking. It feels strange to not write in full sentences but we are slowly getting the hang of it. This week we were learning more about endangered animals in Scotland. One group is researching Golden Eagles. Miss Sutherland brought in a Golden Eagle foot to show us (safely and legally obtained) and we were wowed at the sheer size of it!
Experimenting with fractions
Today we were using pan balances, Numicon, the interactive whiteboard and scales to compare fraction sizes. We used the Blockzilla scales to reinforce the greater than/ less than symbols as well as Numicon to visualise the different sizes fractions represent. It was tricky to get our heads round at first as we noticed the bigger the denominator, the smaller the fraction piece could be. We will be continuing to explore and work with comparing fractions next week.
Our Christmas party
The P5s had a lovely time at their party on Monday.
This week in P4/5 one of our maths groups has been focussing on building the confidence using arrays to understand multiplication. They were tasked to use as many different resources from around the classroom to create arrays to note in their jotters. The top 3 resources this week were Numicon, counters and Lego. Next week we will try to find some more.
In August P4/5 went on their firs trip of the year- to the Newton Rooms at the UHI campus. They went to learn about the different systems our bodies use to keep healthy. Through discussions and fun activities we were able to discover more about the digestive system, the immune system and the respitory system. Here are some pictures from our amazing day out.
