Stepdaughter to Vice President Harris, Ella Emhoff has landed a contract with world-renowned model agency, IMG Models. On the day of President Biden’s Inauguration, high fashion attire caught the attention of audiences. President Biden himself wore a custom-made Ralph Lauren suit while Vice President Harris wore a purple Christopher John Rogers coat with a dress to match, also custom-made. Her granddaughter’s coat, however, led her name to trend all over Twitter.

Emhoff was styled in a Miu-Miu coat from the Fall/Winter 2020 collection. The feminine coat was embezzled with orange crystals and covered Emhoff from head to toe. The luxurious coat retails at nearly $5,000. She told Vogue she desired a dress that brought out her femininity.

Fashion isn’t a foreign topic to Emhoff. She is currently in her final years at Parsons School of Design, a fashion school in New York City. In addition to studying fashion, she runs a namesake clothing brand and crotches all her pieces. Needless to say, her creations are a mix of wacky colors and interesting silhouettes. Clearly, her inauguration outfit was a work of stylists as it differs so heavily from her.

A few weeks later, her name trended again when it was revealed to the public that she’d signed with IMG Models.

The news was shocking for several reasons; IMG is one of the top agencies in the world and singing to them is a major deal. IMG represents top models such as Bella Hadid, Gigi Hadid, Kate Moss, and Meghan Roche. Signing with the agency is no easy feat. This leads to the next reason the news struck the internet; people had felt like Ella getting signed was nepotism. It was. After all, all she’d done is wear a coat chosen by her stylist.

It does feel like a slap to the face to girls who spend years trying to get signed, spend months dieting to keep their figure in fear of their agency letting them go and walk runways to get paid in exposure.

Unfortunately, Emhoff isn’t the first case of nepotism and is another case of it in the industry. We can only hope that more models, less known ones, get the same opportunities.

Ella made her debut during New York Fashion week in a campaign with Proenza Schouler fitted in an oversized jet-black suit and curly mullet. Days after, she was on the cover of DUST magazine.
