Throughout the month of June, the Pride Club will be rolling out ways to highlight LGBTQ accomplishments to help staff and students celebrate Pride month in acknowledgement and celebration of the LGBTQ community.

The Pride Club has been collecting images of teachers showing their support for the community and then placing the images up onto a bulletin board outside the north office. This is a way for LGBTQ students to feel supportive and to know there are adults who they can rely on as allies.

“LGBTQ youth who report having a least one accepting adult were 40% less likely to report a suicide attempt in the past year," stated a report from The Trevor Project, a nonprofit organization for the welfare of LGBTQ youth.

June was officially recognized in 1994 as the month dedicated to celebrating LGBTQ icons and raising awareness. The first president to recognize Pride Month was Bill Clinton 1999. President Barack Obama recognized Pride Month during his entire presidency. Another course of action the LGBTQ community and its allies are taking is highlighting articles by LGBTQ writers, highlighting TEDTalks, sharing statistics, and crowdfunding projects to LGBTQ people in need. It has proven vital to listen to LGBTQ members of the Black community, as they are overwhelmingly affected by police violence.

Ultimately, the LGBTQ community has stressed that support, acknowledgement, and celebration should not end with Pride Month. Support, they say, for the LGBTQ community should be expressed year round, and LQBTQ voices should be uplifited.
