David Douglas high school has decided to add two new English credit classes in 2021-22 focused on African American and Latin studies.

These English classes will be optional. They will replace one English credit, so instead taking a regular English class a student can take one of these two new classes. The Latin course will replace the English III class and the African American studies will replace English IV. The department is still deciding on the scope and sequence of the material, but the classes will be focusing on literature, culture, and contributions to learning.

“These two groups are often underrepresented in our curriculum and country, despite the fundamental role they have played in shaping this country,” said ELA teacher Chris Mathews.

Despite the importance of these studies, very few high schools have these courses and only 190 degrees were awarded from colleges and universities across the country for Black Studies. There are even fewer awarded for Latin Studies.
