Lesson 2
Lesson 2: Transgender Identities around the World!
At this point, the students have been introduced to the concept of gender identity and gender issues, and they have had at least some practice in listening and thinking critically about ideas presented to them verbally. Being high intermediate to advanced level learners, they should be able to adequately recall the new vocabulary and terminology taught in the last lesson. In this lesson, they will focus on first-person accounts of transgender issues and describe and reflect on what they watched/heard.

Pass out the prepared papers to each student
Each group should have all three individuals in the video
Explain:
They will be listening for the person on their paper
They need to try to answer the discussion questions on the paper on the second run through of the video
Summarize their person’s identity as best as possible for an activity after the video
That you will play the video twice.
Play the video
As the video plays, point out which speaker is on screen to bring attention
After a short break (~1 min), play the video again to allow more comprehension
After the second viewing, allow the students 5 minutes to summarize their thoughts and add any last minute details
Each student in the group should have a different person that they focused on, Allow each group ~10 minutes so each person can talk about what they wrote down about their person
Allow 20 more minutes after the activity for general discussion between peers, ask them to come up with at least 2 clarifying questions.
Bring the class together
Discuss/ answer the questions that they had come up with
Conclusion / Closer Activity
After each group has had a chance to talk with the class about their discussion questions, open the class up for final thoughts
