Lesson 3:

Solutions

This last lesson focus on perhaps the most important aspect of climate education - solutions. Here we focus on both an understanding of large-scale, societal emissions, and daily, individual emissions, and what students can do to mitigate the latter.

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

#1 - Analyze and describe what habits and practices contribute to carbon dioxide emissions, both on an individual level and global scale.

#2 - Apply key vocabulary accumulated throughout the entire unit in speech.

#3 - Analyze and describe potential solutions to mitigate emissions in their personal lives and on a larger, more global scale.

#4 - Practice listening skills when summarizing key points of peers’ presentations.

#5 - Practice public speaking skills while developing fluency.

Class Time Needed for Activity: 90 minutes

Preparation Time:

Around 5 minutes to set up the Emissions - Lesson #3 slides, and print out a copy for each student of the Peer Evaluation Form for Final Presentations. Make sure to print out the Peer Evaluation Forms double sided if you want students to evaluate more than 2 peers (our lesson plan intends for the evaluation of 3 peers, but adjust as necessary given your number of students and available time).

Resources Needed:

Introductory Blurb: This lesson is meant to act as the conclusion to the social justice topic of the oceanic impacts of climate change, which is the content students will be learning as a means of improving their English. Students will wrap up what they have learned in this solution based and reflection focused lesson. Students will showcase what they have learned over the course of the unit in a final fluency assessment in the form of a presentation.

Lesson 3 - Solutions

Caveats:

One caveat is that reliable internet access might not always be available in the classroom, and students might not all have access to their own device, which is necessary for students’ final presentations. See options below for alternatives if you find yourself in this situation.

Options:

An alternative option for the final presentation would be to have students create physical posters. Make sure to provide them with all the materials necessary (poster boards, markers, etc). This option might take more time, as it is a more creative process, so make sure to account for this when lesson planning.
