Materials Needed:
Worksheet of Deaf Do’s and Don’ts for students to take home. (for Assessment).
Slips of paper with scenarios written on them.
Adobe Spark Video for further instructions for teachers and students.
Learning Objectives / SWBAT…
1. Recall ASL signs from last class and apply recent knowledge to new knowledge.
2. Understand proper ways to interact with a Deaf person.
3. Use Adobe Spark to roleplay a situation of communicating with someone who is deaf or hard-of-hearing.
4. Relate communication with someone who is deaf back to their own experiences or to communication with people who speak other languages.
Warm UP
Warm Up and/or Review
Time: 15 minutes LO #s targeted: 1
Activity Type/Name: Recall ASL alphabet and learn 3 new signs
Steps/Directions:
Tell the students they are going to sign the alphabet as a class. (2 ½ minutes)
The teacher will provide a visual of the alphabet on the board.
Tell the students they are going to learn 3 signs that represent Hearing, Hard-of-Hearing and Deaf.
Teacher will demonstrate and the students will follow.
The teacher will say Hard-of-Hearing, Deaf and Hearing and the students have to make the correct sign to the words that are said out loud.
Activity 1
Assessment
Time: 25-30 minutes LO #s targeted: 2,3
Activity Type/Name: Explanation of Do’s and Don’ts

Steps/Directions:
Teacher will play a video that explains the do’s and don'ts of interacting with the Deaf community in social situations. (7 minutes)
Ask the students to watch the video once through.
Teacher will handout the worksheet and play the video again
Tell the students to fill out the worksheet of do’s and don’ts related to the video while watching it a second time.
Ask the students if they have any additional do’s and don’ts that should be added.
Ask the students to write a couple of bullet points of why learning about the Deaf culture is important to them. (about 3 minutes)
Go over the do’s and don’ts as a class and ask for examples of how to display the do’s in a social situation.

Activity 2
Practice + Assessment
Time: 35-40 minutes LO #s targeted: 2, 3
Activity Type/Name: Roleplay: Adobe Spark Video
Steps/ Directions:
Break up the class into small groups of five.
Give each group a slip of paper that has a scenario written on it.
The groups of students will read the scenarios given to them and have to act out two “do’s” and two “don’t’s” of communicating with a deaf person.
One person will act as the deaf person, another will be the bystander, and the other members will explain the situation while it is being acted out and why it is correct or incorrect. The explanation can either be oral or written on the slides.
Using Adobe Spark video, the groups will have to make a video of themselves acting out the scenario given with the explanation. The video can include photos, videos, and text.
The video can be up to two minutes maximum.
Once the video is complete, each group will present it to the class.

Wrap Up Activity: Connect it/relate it to ESL students:
How it is difficult for ESL students to communicate in situations that may be new to them.
Ask students to give examples of when they had trouble communicating with someone. EX; at the grocery store or at the movies.
