In this lesson students will participate in a fly swat activity to learn vocabulary, a bingo listening activity centered on the vocabulary, and a group discussion at the end.

Fly Swat Activity
Activity: Fly Swap Activity
Steps & Teacher Directions:
Set up the game by placing fly cards out on the table, well spaced out, and word side up. (Appendix E)
The teacher will call out one word/definition at a time
The students need to find the word/definition on the table and then “splat” the word with their fly swatter while repeating the word.
Other Options
Group Fly Swat
Small group of up to 4 students sit side by side. Try to be the first to splat each word!
Compound Fly Swat
Calling multiple words/definitions or calling the word and the definition.
Calling out a word for the student to look for a definition and vice versa.
Activity: Video and Bingo
This activity will help students reinforce their familiarity with the vocabulary terms introduced in the prior pre-listening exercise. The vocabulary used in the bingo game will have been introduced in the warm-up fly swat activity.
Steps & Teacher Directions:
Prepare the bingo cards. (Appendix A)
Hand out a Bingo card to each student or have students create on a sheet of notebook paper their own matrices of a 3x3 square.
Write the vocabulary learned in the previous exercise on the board. Say each term out loud as you write or have the students repeat back to you each word listening for proper pronunciation.
Have each student choose any of the words to fill in each empty square on their bingo card.
Before starting, explain the rules of bingo for any students that are not familiar and check their understanding of CCQs.
Due to the smaller 3x3 Bingo card, the winner will be the first to fill every square and not the traditional way of getting 3 in a row.
Play the video from the previous activity. Students will listen and cover each word on their Bingo card with a marker as they hear it in the video.
When a student successfully covers each of their selected terms that students call out “Bingo”
Check the card to make sure that the markers have all been placed over correct words. If so, that student wins a prize. (Appendix C)
Options:
A reward to the winner (points on a quiz, candy, stickers, etc)
Alternate win conditions (four corners wins, cover the entire board, etc)
If time permits it may be helpful to review the terms and definitions of the vocabulary
This activity can be accomplished without bingo cards. Alternatives include having students create their own 3 by 3 matrices on a piece of notebook paper, or simply write down their chosen words and write a checkmark next to each one as it is called.
Small Group Disscussion
Divide the class into groups of 3-4 depending on the class numbers/size.
Provide each group with these questions and have them discuss questions 1-4 discuss amongst themselves (10mins) (See Appendix D)
After 10 minutes, get each group to partner with another group
Each group can now share the highlights of their discussion with the other group (5mins)
Bring the class back together and have volunteers (or voluntolds) speak on the similarities and differences of their conversation(s) with the other group (5mins)
Open dialogue and concluding thoughts (2-5mins)
