In this lesson we will look at and discuss the Anti-Homosexuality Act that passed in Uganda in December 2013. This law prohibits and criminally punishes LGBTQIA+ people in Uganda. Homosexuality, amongst other things, can be punished with imprisonment and even a death sentence to offenders of this bill. This bill additionally criminalizes the promotion of homosexuality with imprisonment. As we will explore, this very restrictive bill is being met with significant backlash from the Ugandan people as well as other nations.
This is a 90 minute lesson plan that revolves around the stories of two Ugandan LGBTQIA+ individuals who fled the country due to the law. Find the full lesson plan link here.
Students will be able to...
Write and rewrite definitions to vocabulary words
Identify things they learned, have questions about, or shocked them from a video
Follow along with a video and put parts of a story in chronological order
Write down answers to questions and reflect on them
Summarize a video using vocabulary words
Appendix A: Presentation
Appendix B: Matching Card Set
Appendix C: Vocabulary Worksheet
Appendix D: Ugandan LGBTQ+ Video
Appendix E: Story Snippets
Appendix F: Assessment Worksheet
Time Needed: 20 minutes
Procedures:
Introduce the vocabulary in the presentation in Appendix A. To introduce the vocabulary, say the word and have the students repeat it then say the definition of the word. Afterwards, handout the vocabulary cards and the worksheet to the students. Have the students work in as many groups as you have sets of cards to hand out.
Have the students, with their groups, match the pictures and definitions to the matching vocabulary term.
Have the students write out definitions to the words represented by the pictures on the handout in Appendix C.
Have the students rewrite the definitions to the words represented by definitions.
Time Needed: 20 minutes
Procedures:
Play the video in Appendix D until 2:02. Replay the video if needed.
Ask the students to quietly write down one thing they learned, one question they have, and one thing that shocked them from the video using at least 3 vocabulary words. Have the word bank for the pertinent vocabulary available on the board.
Ask the students to share their responses for one thing they learned with their classmates, give 4 minutes for this. Ask the students to then do the same thing for the next response they had and give 4 minutes once again. Do this again for the last response.
Time Needed: 20 minutes
Procedures:
Watch the second half of the video as a class and rewatch if needed.
Explain to the students that five snippets containing information about Champagne’s story have been placed out of order around the room. Have students walk around and write them out on a piece of paper (the order does not matter).
Once students have written down each snippet, have students put them in order based on what they saw in the video about Champagne’s story.
In partners or small groups, have students share their story sequences and discuss how they arranged them.
Time Needed: 20 minutes
Procedures:
Hand out the papers to the students. Each paper should have 1 of 3 questions, make sure that there is an equal amount of each question being handed out to students. Then have the students meet in groups with other students that share their same question.
Give the students a few minutes to independently answer the question and have them put their pencils down when finished.
Have the students share their answers with the group.
Assign a different letter to each person in the already formed groups. Once everyone has a letter, have them find the people that share their same letter in the other groups.
Have each person share their response to their individual question and summarize what their group discussed. When students are listening, have them write down their classmates' responses to the other questions.
Have each student write an additional reflection to each of their classmates' answers on the paper and collect them at the end of the activity.
Time Needed: 10 minutes
Procedures:
Ask the students to take out a paper and writing utensil.
Ask the students to write a few sentences using at least 5 vocabulary words about what they think might be similar or different in the US regarding LGBTQIA+ legislation to that of Uganda.
Have the students turn in the paper before they leave class.
