Materials Needed:
1. Worksheet for Deaf culture video.
2. Notes template (Warm Up activity).
3. Computer to watch Deaf Culture Video.
4. Computer w/ PowerPoint to display the ASL signs.
5. Piece of paper for notes in warm up.
6. White board/ large piece of paper for students to write their ideas as a class.
7. Markers, pens or pencils.

Warm Up
Warm Up and/or Review
Time: 25-30 minutes LO #s targeted: 1,3,4
Activity Type/Name: Group discussion on Deaf culture
Steps/Directions:
Tell the students they have 30 seconds to get in groups of 4.
Once the students are in their groups ask the students to choose one student to be the writer, one student who is a notetaker, one student will be the speaker and one student will keep the group on task and manage the time.
The writer will take notes on a piece of paper about the groups’ knowledge on deaf culture.
Tell the students they have 5 minutes to discuss with their group and take notes.
After the 5 minutes is up all the groups note takers will come up to the board and write their notes. The notetaker has 2 minutes.
After the 2 minutes the speaker of each group will come up and present their groups’ notes on deaf culture.
Each speaker has 3 minutes to present.
The teacher asks if there are any questions.

Steps/Directions:
Tell the students they are going to watch a 5 minute video that focuses on Deaf/deaf/Hard-of-Hearing identities.
Tell the students they will watch the video 3 times.
The first time the video is played, ask the students to listen/ watch.
Tell the students the second time they watch the video they will have a worksheet that corresponds to the video. The students are to listen and connect the correct terms to the correct definitions.
The third time the video is played the students will check their worksheet. Tell the students they can change their answers if needed and/or check to make sure their words match the correct definitions.
As a class, the teacher will demonstrate popcorn style by matching a word on the worksheet to its correct definition. Then the teacher will then call on a student to match the correct word to its definition. Then have that student call on another student until they have discussed all the words on the worksheet.
Once the class has finished discussing the worksheet the teacher will ask if the class has any questions or need for clarification.

Activity Type/Name: Teaching basic ASL
Steps/ Directions:
Teacher will display the powerpoint of the ASL alphabet. Teacher will explain the importance of knowing American sign language when hearing is not an option.
Ask the class to follow along as they sign A-Z. The first attempt should go slow. Maximum 5 minutes.
For the second round of the alphabet the class is encouraged to speed up the pace. Maximum of 2 ½ minutes.
The teacher will split the class up into 2 groups. Tell the students they have 1 minute to get in their groups and form a circle with their chairs.
The teacher will explain to the groups that they are competing against each other. Each group will sign the alphabet. The teams have 3 attempts to master the alphabet.
Tell the students they are not allowed to speak when signing the Alphabet. If a student speaks then they must start the alphabet over. Tell the students they are allowed to look up at the board to reference the alphabet.
One student from each group will start with the sign A the person to their right will be B and so on. They will continue this until they finish the alphabet (Z).
Once the team(s) have gone through the whole alphabet(A-Z) the team's whole group must raise their hands in the air.
The team who finishes the alphabet first out of the 3 rounds will be the winner.
