This unit was put together with the intention of raising awareness and promoting understanding of the disproportionate success rates found within the American system of education.
Information in this unit ranges from simple activities which are aimed at students gaining knowledge on socioeconomic status (SES) as a concept, to preparing the students for attending college and succeeding there. Regardless of their social class, all students can benefit from understanding the realities of pursuing a degree in the US education system.
Armed with new SES background knowledge, college admittance preparation, and tools to help them succeed at the collegiate level, this unit should aid them in attaining their college degree and prepare them for what trials and tribulations may await them on their journey.
Students will be introduced to the factors that accumulate to form socioeconomic status. They will create their own examples of socioeconomic factors based on real world connections, and they will begin to discuss how socioeconomic status may impact someone's access to a quality education.
Students will further explore the factors of socioeconomic status and how those factors come together to systemically interfere with access to college education. They will use this knowledge to engage in meaningful discussions and prepare for the college admittance process.
Students will dive deeper within the impact of socioeconomic status on undergraduate performance and analyze success rates. They will engage in activities aimed at understanding how to succeed at a collegiate level, and discuss possible solutions to the performance gap in education.
