Unit Overview

This unit focuses on building skills in both reception and expression through stories centering around the housing crisis. We approach this topic through a lens of stigma awareness.

Our first lesson presents an overview of stigmas as well as an opportunity to connect to and share personal experiences.  Students will learn about stigma and its consequences through the activation of prior knowledge, structured discussion,  and personal reflection. During the second lesson, students will listen to and analyze authentic media and participate in a jigsaw activity to “break the stigma” surrounding people that are homeless. Lastly, students will participate in a grammar lesson about phrasal verbs and synthesize both content and grammar knowledge in a housing crisis simulation game. The block plan will conclude with reflection and the use of digital media to record responses to the lesson activities. This set of lessons follows a social constructivist approach, where each lesson will build on the knowledge learned in prior lessons.
