Length of Activity:
15 minutes
Learning Objectives:
SWBAT formulate the experience they had with their 7-day sustainability challenge and present it to the class
SWBAT identify positive, neutral, or negative aspects of their experience with the challenge through voting
Materials: reports, written by students; laptops (optional)
Note: This activity builds on the "I dare you" game included in the last part of Lesson 1. Last time students were supposed to accept a 1-week challenge having to do with sustainability (no plastic water bottles, only ride bike/walk to campus etc.) and this week they are supposed to report on their experience.
Steps:
1. Discussion. Students put their chairs in a circle and discuss their experience with their personal challenge, mentioning pros, cons, difficulties.
2. The teacher will ask whether or not they will be willing to repeat a similar challenge for a longer period of time.
3. One student at a time stands up and tells about their experience.
4. The teacher asks, if there were difficulties/issues with it.
5.The teacher will asks the class if there is a person who is practicing this kind of sustainability-related activity on a permanent basis and could potentially share their tips on how to succeed in it and the ways to overcome issues (e.g. if a bike ride is too long, one can combine it with riding a bus etc.).
6. The teacher will tell other students that they are also welcome to chime in and offer possible solutions. The discussion continues until everyone had a chance to share their ideas.
7. Voting: Students vote on whether the experience was mostly positive or negative and the instructor calculates the results.
8. Turning in the reports. Students will turn in their written reports, which will be graded later.
