90 Minute Lesson Plan
Warm Up: Obergefell v. Hodges Vocabulary Activity
Time Needed: 15 minutes
Procedures:
Using the slides, go through the vocabulary words and clarify the definitions.
Play the video through the slides, Appendix G, on a screen or on a speaker so that students are able to watch/listen to the speech.
Have students form a circle and begin by selecting a vocabulary word and throwing the ball to a student. The student will then attempt to define the vocabulary word and then once successful, pick another vocabulary word and then throw the ball to another student. Keep track of which words have been defined by checking them off on Appendix B. Continue until each student has gotten at least one turn.
Activity 1: Obergefell v. Hodges Running Dictation Activity
Time Needed: 20 minutes
Procedures:
Have the students find a partner (if there is an odd number, create a group of three). Have each pair of students set up a seat and a destination in the classroom that is about 10-20 feet away from them.
At the destination tables, place the 10 quotes from the video from Appendix D in a random order and hand out the blank slips of paper to the student pairs.
Play the video from Appendix A from 0:00-2:05 and replay if needed.
Have the students designate one runner and one writer to start. The runner will go from the start table to the destination table, read the first quote, come back to the start table, and say it out loud from memory to the writer, who will write it down on the blank slips of paper. They will switch roles after each quote.
Once the students are finished reading and writing all of the quotes, have them organize the quotes in order of how they were said during the speech from the video. Whichever group correctly puts the quotes in order first is the winner of the game.
Activity 2: United States Transgender Bills Activity
Time Needed: 20 minutes
Procedures:
Assign each student in the class a state from the list in the worksheet and hand out Appendix H to each student. Have the students research transgender policy in their assigned state from the given websites and write down what they learn on the handout.
Have the students walk around and talk to other students about their state’s policies and write about other states on their handouts until they have filled out information from each state.
Once the students have filled out each state's information, have them compare and/or contrast their state to one of the others.
Assessment: Mini Poster Presentation Activity
Time Needed: 25 minutes
Procedures:
Break the students into small groups of 3 to 4 and instruct them to brainstorm ideas for a poster relating to LGBTQIA+ legislation in the United States. Their poster should include at least 6 vocabulary words.
Instruct the students to create the poster idea that they brainstormed.
Have the students present their posters to the class. Each member of each group should speak for equal amounts of time on different parts of the poster.
Wrap Up: LGBTQIA+ Discussion Activity
Time Needed: 10 minutes
Procedures:
Hand out Appendix F to the students and have them discuss questions in small groups or pairs.
Open the discussion to the whole class and ask for a few students to share their thoughts with the whole class.
