Language Skills and Strategies in Focus: Speaking and Listening
Age & Level: B2 (High-intermediate)
Length of Lesson: 90 minutes
Materials Needed:
Slides: Appendix A
Work Sheet (one per student): Appendix B
Podcast Episode (minutes 31:18 - 35:00) Appendix C
Students will be able to identify and describe real-world examples of accessibility and inaccessibility in outdoor environments using prior vocabulary and personal experience.
Students will be able to plan, organize, and script a short podcast dialogue that clearly presents an accessibility issue, supporting details, and an advocacy message.
Students will be able to collaborate with a partner to record and deliver a 2–3 minute podcast episode demonstrating clear pronunciation, balanced participation, and persuasive spoken English.
In this lesson, students will apply their speaking and collaboration skills to create and record a short podcast episode advocating for greater outdoor accessibility. Building on prior lessons about outdoor barriers and inclusion, students will analyze how media and storytelling can influence public awareness and inspire change. Through guided warm-up discussions, analysis of a sample podcast, and use of a planning worksheet, students will learn how to structure and deliver a persuasive advocacy message. By the end of the lesson, students will record a 2–3 minute dialogue demonstrating clear organization, strong reasoning, and effective spoken communication.
The following materials are needed to start class:
Slides: Appendix A
Warm-up Prompts: Appendix A (Slide 2)
Introduction:
Present the silent warm-up activity for students to complete as they arrive (Slide 2, Appendix A)
Have students discuss among themselves for 5-10 minutes as you circulate around the classroom and check-in
Explain objectives for today’s lesson and agenda (Slide 3, Appendix A)
Speaking Lesson:
Inform students that we will now move into todays activity, make sure to highlight the connection to previous lessons
Start by playing the podcast excerpt (minutes 31:18 - 35:00) linked on Slide 4 of Appendix A
As students listen to the podcast, pause when needed to add clarification or additional explanation
After playing the podcast, discuss the questions on slide 5 of Appendix A
Write strong ideas from the discussion of the board
Next, explain the structure the students' podcast should follow (Slide 6, Appendix A)
Hand out the Podcast Planning Worksheet (Appendix B)
As a class go over each section of the worksheet
Model filling in the first part of the work sheet using a sample issue (e.g., lack of braille trail maps) before beginning the activity
Part 1
After giving your example, have students form pairs and begin filling out their worksheets
Display instructions on Slide 7 of Appendix A
As students work monitor and check-in with pairs. Ensure the students have:
Clearly chosen an accessibility issue
Well-written explanations and examples
Equally shared speaking roles
A strong clear advocacy message
Once all the pairs have planned their script, have them practice reading their dialogue out loud with their partner for about 5-10 minutes
Part 2
After pairs have rehearsed their script have them join another pair
In groups of four, each pair will read through their podcast scripts
After each read-through the students will give each other feedback.
You can write some of the following feedback prompts on the board for guidance:
What was clear and easy to follow?
What was confusing or rushed?
Did both speakers participate evenly?
Was the advocacy message strong?
After everybody has received feedback, bring the class back together for the final part of the activity
Part 3
Now its time for students to create their final products!
Make sure each pair has at least on device that can record audio and/or video
Each pair should record their podcast, it should be around 2-3 minutes
Once the podcast is recorded have students upload into a Padlet
To end the activity ensure each pair of students has:
Recorded a 2-3 minute long podcast
Successfully uploaded the podcast into Padlet
Checked that their podcast plays properly
Wrap-up
For the lesson wrap-up, switch to the exit ticket prompts on Slide 8 in Appendix A
As a class discuss and reflect on the activity using the guiding prompts
Finally, collect the Podcast Planning Worksheets from students to check for understanding
That concludes the final lesson of the Accessibility to the Outdoors Curriculum Unit!
