First Generation is a feature that spotlights students that will be the first in the family to attend and graduate from college or a staff member who was the first in the family to do so. We hope this segment inspires others and that it offers support to all those around us who are or will be first generation!
This month we feature Rebeca Gomez!
MAY FIRST GENERATION
What brought you to WYWLA? How did you feel when you were accepted?
I came to WYWLA because I wanted to try something new and to have a brighter future. When I got accepted, I was shocked as I did not believe that I would make it.
How would you describe yourself as a student in middle school?
I would describe myself as a kind and quiet person. I always get my work done and mind my own business.
Do you feel added pressure or experience any struggles being part of a first generation in your family to attend/ graduate from college? How did you overcome these challenges?
Sometimes I do feel stressed, but I always think about my family and how working hard in school will get me closer to helping my family have a better future.
What advice were you given in your academic journey?
Never stop believing in myself because the only person you will always have is yourself.
What colleges have you thought about possibly attending/graduating from?
I am not sure what colleges I would consider attending in the future.
Who currently forms your support system?
My older sibling and I form my support system because they always have my back and I always have theirs.
Have you given thought to what you’d like to study and become professionally after you graduate from college?
I have thought about going into the medical field because I like it, but I´m still unsure on what I want to be.
What will it mean to your family when you graduate from college?
My family would be very proud in every aspect because I´m the only one in my whole family to experience going to WYWLA and going to experience going to college.
What piece of advice or words of wisdom do you have to WYWLA students who will be the first in their family to attend/ graduate from college?
It is hard and you will feel a lot of stress and pressure, but at the end of the day, the only thing that will keep you going will be what you want to achieve. Be the person you want to be remembered as.
