Alexander Graham Bell said, "When a door closes, another opens..." But in terms of the Firkin, we FINALLY have doors that not only close, but lock, too! When we bought the house back in May, the first thing we wanted done (after the roof, of course) was securing the windows and doors. Well, my friends, today, October 14, the Firkin is finally secure. All doors open and close and they can all be locked.

I can say that Bill and I were holding our breath this whole time - I know, we are pretty amazing people, Guinness world record level, but who has time for that? Needless to say, we can breathe now that our computers and all the other things you don't want stolen are now secured behind brand new doors.

It was a little hard replacing the Adirondack room door with a fancy new door (and it IS fancy). The original door was paper thin and also did not lock.

In other news, Bill and I (but mostly Bill), finally installed the kitchen floor. Honestly, we just needed one weekend when there weren't ten million things to do and it finally arrived.

The kitchen floor when we began. Underneath the LifeProof planks is plywood that I primed with Killz back in the summer. It's filthy now...even though I attempt to mop it. SO SO SO glad we finally have some kind of flooring. Installation was not as easy as the YouTube videos and Home Depot guys suggest...especially when you are working with a floor in the 180 year old part of the house. Everything. Is. Crooked. EVERYTHING.

Bill's jigsaw had a notch on the bottom that was scratching all the planks as we cut - once again, duct tape for the win!

He took Bill to Home Depot and they came home with all this! How grateful are we? No words. Well...I'm sure I could think up a thousand, but it all boils down to a huge THANK YOU.

Our electrician came by and sorted out a few things. Bill finally was able to install the final light on the deck.

You may recall that the light closest to you was dangling from the ceiling for the last two months. FIXED! Thank you, Chris.

This knocker spent most of it's life on my grandparent's house in Bergen, Norway. It was the welcome symbol of my childhood summers - the first thing I saw as I ran up to their house after spending 8 hours on a plane dreaming about my Mormor's rolls and my Morfar's warm hugs. When we sold their house, after their passing, I was able to save the door knocker.
This knocker spent most of it's life on my grandparent's house in Bergen, Norway. I am so grateful to Bill for holding on to this piece of my life and then spending a good chunk of time polishing it - it had totally oxidized to green.
