First, this day cannot pass without thinking about all the people we lost, and how precious life is. On September 11, 2001, one of my childhood friends, Mike Clarke gave his life as a first responder. I could not, in good conscience write about my house adventures without acknowledging that today, I get to work on and complain about a beautiful old house and Mike...is gone, along with so many others.

I could not, in good conscience write about my house adventures without acknowledging that today, I get to work on and complain about a beautiful old house and Mike...is gone, along with so many others.
There are so, so many things to say, but I will just say that if we are lucky enough to be here today, we should live each day with gratitude. And with that, I thank Mike and all other servicemen for their sacrifices so I can curse the Firkin (or cry tears of joy) because I can.

Today I did a THING - Drywall repair!!!
Today I did a THING - Drywall repair!!!
We need this hole in the kitchen gone so we can put a beautifully painted cabinet there.
Here I am scoring the dry wall. Ooo.
Here comes the joint compound!
Hole: GONE. Full Disclosure: Bill helped with this part because I am really bad at laying on large amounts of joint compound.
I also scrubbed some steps. I had only washed the bottom three. Now, all of them are done.

Our only functioning bathroom needed some new fixtures. Bill went out and got some...but trying to get them on turned out to be...

Yes, water did come shooting out into his...yes, that happened.
After taking off all the fixtures...we learned that, in fact, the tiles needed to be removed, SO, back went the rusty gold fixtures...
And this guy. We have gotten a lot of tips from friends on what to do here, but so far none have worked. We gave up, but will head back tomorrow.
Since the kit was already open and we messed up at least half of it trying to get the handles on, we went ahead and installed the shower head. By far, the easiest part. It's lovely.

Poor Bill. He got soaked, went through all the tools...and only the shower head was a success. -_- Frustrating to say the least.

On a positive note, one of the little things that has kept me sane all this summer is this soap. It's handmade in small batches by a dear friend and it smells like peace and a walk in the woods and everything that is the opposite of a house full of bleach and mold. This one is my favorite. I love the way it makes the room smell (so much I left bars in rooms other than the bathroom) and I love the smell on my skin after I wash with it.

Tonight I will end with siding. There is actual siding on nearly all of the Firkin! Amazing, right? And just in time for the painters..whew! Also featured in these photos - all new windows. Wow. Is this really my Butter Firkin? Apparently, so.
